Create a wiki section?

I looked for a forum suggestions section but couldn't find it so I'm posting it here.

How about creating a wiki section?

just like any wiki, any member can edit anytime.

I just came back from NCL's cruise from NYC to Canada on the Gem and have lots of info on cabins, events, excursions, casino, free internet, etc.

I also probably asked a bazillion questions before I went on my cruise.

most of those questions could probably have been answered by a Gem wiki.

so how about creating a wiki.cruisecritic.com page?

TPTB here won't want anything promoted that would 'compete' with this site. Sorry. Expect this thread to go 'poof'.

the powers that be?

why would a wiki compete with the forum?

and even if it did, wouldn't the wiki bring in more eyeballs overall?

(ie: ads in the wiki)

and lastly, why would this thread go poof?

I don't think the management would mind posting such information on CruiseCritic. It is always best to post such info on the forum for that cruise line since that is where people should be looking for information specific to that line. Some of these forums have what is called "stickies" with information about cabins, for instance. These were normal threads started by people like you that saw a lot of interest and the moderators saw the value and placed them at the top of the forum as a helpful source on information. They are are a permanent feature of that forum - thus he name "stickies". Here are two on the Celebrity cruise line forum as examples:

http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=911018

http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1911871

Also on the Celebrity forum are a couple of threads called "Celebrity Secrets" and "New Celebrity Secrets" which share information about features and items that don't typically get mentioned on the company's web site. These sometimes become buried in past pages if there aren't any new posting made, but a search on that forum for the word "secret" will bring it up. Here is one for an example:

http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1826925&highlight=secret

I suggest you check on the NCL forum with this type of thread. If none exists, start one there.

ahh.. but it wont be a wiki.

and the info in a thread isn't as easy to find as in a wiki.

ie: info people add will be buried and you might have to read thru multiple pages to get the info you want.

a wiki type page would be just easier.

there are probably free programs to set up a wiki. (just like there are free programs for a forum.)

If it has to be a wiki page, why not search on wiki for instructions on how to set up such a page. Since you don't want it to be on CruiseCritic, CruiseCritic really isn't the place to come to to figure it out. It's like asking a salesman at a Ford dealership what you need to do to purchase a Chevrolet.

This is exactly why I despise Wikipedia - anyone can edit it, anytime. The information may or may not be correct. Why in the world would I trust my cruise vacation to a site where some disgruntled member can change the info anytime s/he wants to? See what I'm saying? :p

At least now, we are fairly certain to get a reasonable/accurate answer to most any question because several members will probably say the same thing over and over again in the thread (right? like what happens here all the time.. hehe.. :) ).

Sorry but I would never even read such a site. It's just not reliable.

Have you contacted the administrators? Suggesting it here will get you nowhere but I really don't think you'll get anywhere with them either.

I completely agree with Langley Cruisers. Personally, I never use wiki for just the reasons she stated, and would never use it here if such a thing would materialize.

I understand you wanting all information in one place put it is just not possible. One size does not fit all and some answers are cruise line specific. It's really not all that hard to find answers, if you can't find something just ask. There are umpteen members who have more than just one cruise under their belt and are extremely knowledgeable.;):)

I guess I just don't understand what it is you want. Are the hundreds of boards (yes, really) not enough for you? Sorry, not being sarcastic - I'm truly asking. Most of the boards are specific, and then there are a few general boards. Some days I honestly think this site is too big! LOL :p

You said you visited the NCL board a lot before your recent cruise. That's great and that's what it's there for. What is it you are looking for that isn't already here?

The contact info is in the third "Announcement" at the top of the main page.

I spent a lot of time go back and forth among threads, and asking a lot of questions about the Gem.

time and effort could have been saved (for both me and the people answering) by having the info on 1 page, like Wikipedia does.

(ie: Gem main page, then direct links to Gem rooms page, excursions page, casino, etc.)

I see. Thanks for replying. We do have a wonderful search function here. So many people say the search feature here stinks, but on any board there is a search button called "Search this Forum" on the right hand side. THAT is the way to search because it only searches on that one board. Use the Advanced Search, set it to search ONLY the titles (not the entire messages), and type in one word, in your case "Gem". Guaranteed to bring up only the threads about Gem. :)

Just trying to help. :)

There is a link at the bottom of every page: "Need help? Contact Us" You can also access this link on the "Who Are We?" FAQ page.

I did not need a wiki page to figure this out since it is easily found right here - if someone bother's to look, that is.

I feel the same way. Often aspects of cruising on a specific line may change from time to time. And even sometimes what one person says is the way that something works may either not be right or there could be a temporary change (for example, when Princess instituted a charge in one dining venue on one of the ships, there was such a hue and cry that the cruise line has dropped it for now). Just consider that you can call the 800 number for a cruise line and ask a question, and then call another time, and get a completely different answer.

What I do before each cruise is to read up on the FAQ section for the cruise line I'm going on. I even did this before our last cruise, even though we were going on the same ship from the previous cruise.

If I have a question about what happens in actual practice on board, I can then go to the cruise line forum here. But even then, it's best to take the answers with a grain of salt.

With the search engine, you sometimes have to be creative with your key words.

Based on the very different reviews that people post of the exact same cruise, I believe that any information that can be deleted or edited by anyone would be so unreliable that it could never be used. One person who had a great cruise says the Gem is a wonderful ship. Then next day someone who wasn't happy with the cruise comes along and deletes all the good comments and inserts all of his complaints. Now the Gem is a horrible ship. Depending on when you read the wiki page on Gem, you would get an entirely different idea of what the ship is really like.

You could never count on anything being accurate because people with agendas could delete what they don't agree with and add their own perceptions.

No, not for me. I would never use such a tool for any research. Lousy idea!!!
