Check in with first night an over night

Has anyone ever done a cruise when embarkation is an overnight stay in port? I'm wondering how late check in would be the first night. I imagine there would be some cutoff, that people couldn't check in at 3am. Also, I assume muster drill would be the 2nd day.

While the gangway may be open for passengers who have already checked in and have their cruise ID cards, checking in may be a whole different matter. Not only would it depend on the cruiseline staff manning their desks, but also whether passport control kiosks are manned by the host country.

We have done this a couple of times, actually checking in on day 2 on one occasion. The secret is to let the ship know your plans, and they will advise what and when etc.
