What color is YOUR formal?

Recommended Posts

I am so SICK of wearing black dresses on cruises (even though they are quite slimming). After working on my tan all week I would love to find a baby blue or light pink dress, maybe even get real daring and wear yellow! What is your favorite color for a cruise formal? I saw some really pretty ones at Bloomies, lightweight yellow and blue mid-calf dresses.

We are kindred spirits. icon_biggrin.gif I have several of the obigatory black gowns and I'm so sick of no colour that they're relegated to the back of my closet. That leaves me with a moss green silk taffeta formal skirt that I pair with an ivory lace top, a navy sheath and my favourite cherry red Jones New York gown. No more black for this girl.

I love the idea of a yellow gown, if only I could find one that I liked.

Nicole,

I'm a redhead with white skin that's white 12 months a year, so pastels aren't my best colors.

Being a New Yorker I tend to wear a lot of black, but I've gotten some other colors in my dressy wardrobe.

I haven't sorted out which ones I'm bringing yet, but my choices are...

For the most formal of nights I have a bronze gown that has copper beading in the knit part and then solid bronzed silk over it with a matching silk shawl. It's by Badgley Mishka. I bought it for a winter wedding and wore bronzed shoes with it but now will buy bronze or olive strappy sandals if I bring it on our cruise.

I have a very dressy pewter pant outfit. The pants are all pleated and wide legged and the top is a pleated strapless bustier style with a peplum that skims the hips. The edges of the top have a 2" band of darker pewter.

Another choice is a long black crepe dress with very open shoulders. Very plain, no beads, nothing and can work for the most formal or semi formal nights depending on how I accessorize it. I would wear it with black fishnet hose and high heels. Or I have a black 'V' neck sleeveless silk dress with black beads,so it's all black on black.

For the less formal nights I have a sage green ankle length dress w/ spaghetti straps from Laundry. It's georgette over a slip dress and there's a very subtle creme print and a few pale green beads sewn on it in a scattered pattern. It's the closest I can come to pastel.

For ther nights I have black wide legged thin crepe pants that I wear with a variety of tops. I just bought a new one from Catherine Malandrino - it's diagonal striped silk chiffon in shades of blues, greens & beiges. The 2" wide tank-style straps have zillions of ribbons sewn onto it made of the same fabric as the blouse creating a sleeve of ribbons that hit the elbow.

I'll also bring a pair of silk charmeuse pants that are suble verticle stripes of copper and navy. I wear these with either a navy sleeveless bodysuit or a gold silk charmeuse halter top, which is dressier looking.

I WISH I could wear a pastel dress, I just look awful in them. icon_frown.gif I'm jealous that you can. Buy one and enjoy! icon_biggrin.gif

Nicole-

I used to be a black gown gal myself, as you say slimming is a MUST. I found myself wearing Red on my last cruise. Many people commented on how "sexy" it looked. It was floorlength with spaghetti straps out of rhinestones and it is a shiny tafetta. Straight skirt, and I love it!! I would love to do fuschia this next trip. I seem to pull off pastels and the darker colors, depends on the skin tone, tan and all icon_cool.gif. It was a slow process steering away from black, but I'm glad i've broadened my horizons.

I've just started wearing a little black, always before I've worn color. But I have to add a color with the black. I have a black jacket with beautiful embroidered and beaded and flowers and birds. I have another longer jacket that has a red and gold Chinese print. When I wear my Chico's Travellers on casual nights, I have to add a top with color. Then I have to have big beaded, sparkly jewelry, plain black just seems so, well, plain.

My most formal dress for my next cruise is a teal blue. It would not have been my first choice color, but it is pretty and I picked it up at Nordstrom Rack for $22. It also fits perfectly and is a good color on me. I got so excited about my find a friend told me I should leave the price tag on when I wear it!

My daughter is wearing her first formal gown, powder blue with embroidered silver threads through the top. I never would have guessed her to pick out this gown, she is a jeans with hoodie sweatshirt kind of kid. Other than that, she is in basketball shorts with a crew neck T (I cringe a lot). I hope her fashion future is looking up!

I have one black, strapless, with a tight bodice and a very full floor length skirt. Looks very Audrey Hepburn-ish to me. I also bought a wine colored floor length with a train. It's got lots of beads on top and sort of trailing onto the skirt. My first love, however, is black.

I'm wondering Happysinglemom, did you get your dress at David's Bridal? They had a formal like the one you are describing and it was very pretty. Definitely NOT boring.

I'm wearing basic black. I tried to find something else but the best thing I could find was in black.

I've worn a red formal, a shiny teal blue/green formal, and a black one as well. This year my dress is black based but silvery/blue over the black. When I walk it sometimes looks black, sometimes silver, and you can see a hint of the blue.

Sequined -- the color of carribbean water. SO has named it the "cruise dress".

I do own black formals b/c you "must". However, I prefer color. I'll be wearing a blue grey to a July wedding. I have several red gowns, 1 baby pink, 1 bottle green, 1 silver, 1 royal purple, 1 cream, 1 rose / fushcia, & even a gold lame (it's actually strappless w/ a full while tule (spelling?) skirt w/ gold lame polka dots -- almost demure).

My favorite gown is black with some gold, silver and bronze in it. One of these days, I'd really like to find one in green. I love green!

Tiiiigergirl - I got my dress at Steinmart. I had tried on on a month or so ago, and really liked it, and after that no other dress was good enough. I finally decided to go ahead and buy it, and I walk in there and the gowns are 30% off. Boy, do I have timing or what?? icon_biggrin.gif

Even better - Lost more weight so I got to go down a size!!

Adventure of the Seas will be our maiden cruise!

My four formals are black, black, black, and black and white. icon_biggrin.gif I really need some color. For our last cruise, I looked for a formal in a color but the black one found me! Maybe next time around. Take care, Shannon

I have 4 formal outfits that I rotate through my different cruises....my first is a long black dress with sheer jacket, next I have a long sky blue sleeveless that has a flowing chiffon skirt, then I have black "fly away" pants with a turquoise blue and royal blue all sequence high-neck sleeveless top. And, my last outfit is soft pink, long satin skirt with v-neck sheer and crystal top. The last two are my favorites and the ones I receive the most compliments on.

Jane110: As a redhead myself, my best color is turquoise blue. Lately, that color seems to be very popular. I receive more compliments when I am wearing turquoise or light blue than anything else. I used to think green was my best color, but nothing beats blue with my hair and skin tone.

For one of the formal nights, I wore the baby blue gown I wore at my daughter's wedding 3 years ago. The top is sleeveless with silver thread throughout. The bottom is slightly fuller than straight in plain baby blue.

I have to tell you that the bottom had wrinkles when I arrived on the Mariner. I gave the bottom of the dress to my room attendant that night and had it dry cleaned and pressed and had it back in time for the next night's formal dinner. They did a WONDERFUL job! And all for $8.
