Hello,

I am going on the Carnival Inspirtation on October 1, 05. I was wondering when you get off the ship can you walk from the pier to the main land? Where all the shops and resturant are. Is there a map showing the distance between the pier and the resturants/shops?

Thanks to anyone that knows.

As you're on Carnival you are probably coming into the Puerta Maya pier. You have a bout a block down the pier to get you to the Puerta Maya shopping area which is not the real Cozumel at all, I might add. But they fixed it up nicely if you like that Disney kind of thing. So if you have problems walking, you can just roam around there and shop but don't expect any bargains.

If you want to go into town or to beach club, there is a very organized taxi system that makes it extremely easy to get anywhere you'd like to go and there will be taxis waiting to pick you up as well. The prices are posted so you don't have to worry about that. It's all set up to make it so you don't have to walk very far if you don't wish to.

thanks everyone - we do want to get into san miguel and away from the tourist shops at the pier - 4 miles is a little far to walk, so taxi sounds good - if we rent a car, is parking easy to figure out? how do you avoid getting towed?

Unless you plan on driving around the island, or away from town - I wouldn't bother renting a car. Traffic in San Miguel can be very hectic with the taxis and scooters everywhere. We don't even bother renting a car when we stay for a week - taxis are just easier. Just make sure they don't drop you right at the beginning of town. Ask to go to the Plaza, or a few blocks further north to Los Cinco Soles (a terrific store!) and then walk back heading south till your shopped out, or too tired to walk anymore, and grab a cab back to the ship!

The Puerto Maya pier now has so many shops that I don't feel it's really necessary to go into town but am sure the in-shops would disagree! We enjoy walking but it is a long walk into town and no shade and on a hot day, it's a bit too much. We saw lots of people doing it though.

So, from the Puerto Maya pier, where we think carnival Miracle may or may not dock on 9/16, it is about 4 miles north up the road to the center of San Miguel and the Museo and the cinco something store and other inland stores?

Cab fare I understand is about $6 one-way.

Cab fare from Puerta Maya pier to Chankanaab is about $10 one-way and then there is a $12 admission fee per person, correct?

We are thinking of going to Chankanaab in the morning and early afternoon and then maybe changing and cooling off at the ship and then going into San Miguel in the late afternoon, returning to the ship for dinner at 8:15. Does this sound like a reasonable itinerary?

Thanks

Have tried to no avail to find an online map of Coz - here is a satellite shot of San Miguel and what looks like the three piers:

Chankanaab is to the south of Puerta Maya, San Miguel is to the north of that pier. It's way too far too walk into downtown Cozumel ($6 taxi one way) as port time is precious. Puerta Maya is sweet, but simply put a shopping center. Getting a taxi is a piece of cake in the back of the port. Go downtown and in the side streets for a little more character.

Thanks, y'all, happy to be here! Looking for ideas on things to do in Cozumel, away from the tourist areas.

This thread is from 2005!

This is a very active board - scroll through the first couple of pages for much more recent information of things to do. Enjoy your time in Cozumel!

Welcome to the boards! :D

Away from the tourist area is the east side of the island - book a tour, hire a cab/driver for 1/2 day or more, or sign up for the Cozumel Bar hop. Great scenery, deserted beaches, fun bars, no phones or internet -- and very few tourists.
