So Cheers is back to a flat $49.50 per day?

Totally different clientele

The poster I quoted was comparing the package to different cruise lines. Over the holidays and my summer Alaska cruise, my Princess cruises have shown the same demographics that Carnival displays. Another poster, Tapi, experienced the same thing on his Alaska cruise on Holland America Line.

Anyway, they are similar programs offering nearly the same product. How can they not be subject to comparison? As a consumer, one should be aware of the products and price models that competitors offer.

Ok so how does Royal Caribbean make money when theirs are unlimited. I have friends that could drink more than 15 a day even on port days. So how can Royal Caribbean make money off their packages.

What does royal have to do with what Carnival charges? Answer nothing. Who said Carnivsl is not making money? If you think unlimited drinks is the answer to the issue then I give up.

I agree consumers should be aware. Making any analysis for a crucial one based upon Alaskan clientele would be a large mistake. You really think their clientele is the same in the Caribbean?

I'm glad we were able to get it for the $37.50 price last month for our first cruise. I enjoyed many strawberry daiquiris! Not nearly enough to justify $50 a day though and would have skipped it, and probably skipped any drinks other than the free coffee and lemonade all together.

I wonder if it would be too complicated to have a couple different tiers of Cheers. I think I read another line does earlier in the thread. I would still consider it worthwhile to purchase it for the $37.50 with say, a limit of 10 alcoholic drinks per day and then maybe the $49.50 price for the 15 (or even unlimited!) limit and specialty coffees thrown in to upsell anyone on the fence over which tier to buy. Surely the coffees wouldn't cost them very much on their end. I rarely saw anyone at the couple of specialty coffee areas on the Pride.

Depends on the time of year, length of cruise, if it falls on a holiday or is during a weekend.

There are variables but still not comparable (Alaskan and Caribbean). Even in Carnical the average age in an Alaskan cruise is over 65. Our two Alaskan cruises there were not many people in bars after dinner, and several ambulances waiting in every port.

Very annoying with or without notice. Was my assumption it would stay (or a similar value adjusted for inflation etc).

We picked the Breeze for May 2015 after comparing about 6 different cruises, Incl. RCI, NCL and Carnival.

One of our main criteria was cost and we were calculating using the drinks package prices, tips, various OBC's/speciality dining nights etc.

I am disappointed that we booked and early saver at that so we're locked in. This increase, has made it more expensive that RCI Independence and NCL Gettaway.

Think we probably would have checked out NCL not having sailed NCL before.

It's not a massive amount of money but it is rather annoying having made decisions upon those published values to have it changed on you.

So... a beverage package is not similar to a beverage package on another cruise that offers a similar product on the same principle at a similar price because it isn't Royal Caribbean or Norwegian?

There are many things that have different features and costs with every cruise line. Do they have to charge the same price as their competitors? Do you think that people drink the same amounts on Celebrity as on Carnival? It's free enterprise. They can charge whatever they want and set whatever rules they want (each cruise line). Their clientele will be the final arbiter in the program success.

I'd go for the limit of 10 @ $37.50. But I'm so not going to do $49.95.
Very true, but why would you purchase the cheers package if you only drank beer?
I only drink beer. DW drinks wine. I would have broken even under the previous pricing and she would have made out like a bandit! Operative word "would". New pricing, forget it.
Couple questions Don, did you find that your drinking pattern changed other than the sampling you described (btw that is part of why we are considering cheers for our December cruise on the Breeze)? What is the reason you would not try it again ? Lastly, how was your cruise ?
Going in reverse order. . .

I really enjoyed my time on Carnival Breeze (my first time on that ship). Met some great crew/staff as well as some great fellow passengers. The look of the ship was pleasing on the eyes, and despite it being the same basic layout as Carnival Dream (which I did three times), it seemed to 'flow' better in a few areas where adjustments has been made.

The food presented to me in the dining room was consistently delicious. The service in the dining room was consistently friendly and accurate. The laugh of my table's head waiter was so infectious, that I commented I wanted to have it as my phone ring tone. :)

I had a somewhat new room steward, and she always asking, "What can I do for you, Mr. Don?", and the answer was always the same . . . Nothing, as she'd provided every single thing I needed for my cabin. She would then grin very big. I hope she'll stick with it. Her personality is genuine. Loved loved loved my cove balcony. :)

I came out ahead in the casino, which was good for me, and was also rare for me.:)

I found the Playlist Production shows in the theatre to be a wee step above rather pathetic. Somewhere on this planet are some people who sat around a table and tossed around some ideas on how to make some radical changes to the evening entertainment onboard CCL. I certainly do not know this to be factual, but I'm personally betting some alcohol, and maybe even drugs, were involved. Then they got to walk away and exclaim, "Wow, Carnival just paid me to do that. Winner!" :(

Itinerary had some non-stop 'challenges', but I went with the flow, and decided that if it doesn't burn calories or make you money, it's not worth worrying about. The crew/staff did their best to cope, and I felt SO sorry for those areas that had to staff positions almost every single day in areas that would be closed while in port.

Would I repeat the experience?? Absolutely!! (but I'd be selfish and ask that the itinerary and weather not suck as the same time. ;)
__________________________
I would not do the program again, mainly due to me not having anything booked with Carnival for the future. This was my first CCL voyage of any real length since 2010. Carnival outgrew me and I outgrew Carnival.
Plus, I chose to participate this past week, because it was a vacation break I truly needed more than words can express.
______________________________________
Did my pattern change? Definitely Yes!
For the first time since 2005 I didn't carry any personal wine onboard. My program choices were of lower quality than I'd have brought myself, but the convenience was still nice. Hypothetically (of course) after CCL discontinued having vanilla vodka onboard, I (again hypothetically) may have arranged to have some available in the past. Well, that didn't happen this trip.
When the piano bar, or casino, servers said, "Can I get you another since you seemed to like that one?" it was easy to just plop the ol' card out without thinking.

Did I mention I loved the cove balcony?? Wait, never mind. :p

I told Carnival I'd never do another online review of their product, but it looks like I did. Dang! Since this is a drinking thread, I'm going to ask the judge/jury to strike this as a non-review.

Great to hear your thoughts! :D

100% agree the Carnival really needs to look at the entertainment - or lack there of - but *sigh* that is for another thread! ;)

Forgive me if someone else already said this as I am only at the end of page 4, but I need to vent already. For all you whining vacationers complaining of the price increase, PLEASE GROW THE HECK UP! Carnival is a corporation and can increase prices whenever and however they see fit. Do you go online and rant when your local gas station increases the price of gas without first telling you? Do you boycott and pledge to no longer shop at Walmart when they raise the price of a gallon of milk? ITS THE SAME DARN THING! And for those who try to count out your drinks per day you have had in the past to justify the money spent, you will more than likely drink more if you purchased CHEERS. You may only have 1 scoop of mashed potatoes at home, but at an all you can eat buffer you tend to go for the second.

Yes, its hard to budget the extra money on such a short notice, but you are in no ways forced to purchase the program. If you only want to drink 3 beers a day, pay for 3 beers a day. If you dont drink at all, dont criticize those who choose to partake.

I for one have never purchased the program, but was seriously considering it this trip as it is just my wife and I. Now we may either bring our own onboard or just pay as you go.

Grow up people and quit acting like entitled children. If this post hurts your feelings, you are one of those children. Edited by Chucklez

ITS THE SAME DARN THING!
For me, personally, it would not be the same, as my gas station of choice has never posted their future/upcoming pricing online . . . then prominently placed that information in the Frequently Asked Questions, then have their perpetual Blogging Betty tout the pricing structure as a new win for the guests. Nope, my station has never done that. And if they drop their prices, they'll let me come back time and time again, and never tell me I have a limit on the number of gallons I can put in my vehicle.
I never hit 15 beverages. I never planned to hit 15 beverages. I didn't want to hit 15 beverages.
I chose in advance to purchase the program based on their very recent roll-out of new tiered pricing, and lively conversation here on Cruise Critic.
Being disappointed at this new new revised modified pricing announcement is allowed.

I got a great deal, and apparently right at the very last moment. Future price increases will not affect me whatsoever, but I can understand the disappointment others are feeling.
