Two medevacs delay oasis-of-the-seas

After the gigantic cruise had transferred the passenger to a pilot boat which met the Oasis a mile or so from port, the ship set sail again. But the ship quickly turned around a second time for another medical emergency. There was speculation that a passenger had suffered a heart attack (possibly fatal). This time the Oasis elected to enter the port and dock. ImageUploadedByForums1418153665.149921.jpg.2845f365c944eade1d1120f76e345bef.jpg

If the heart attack was indeed fatal and the doctor on-board had pronounced them dead, I doubt the ship would have returned to port, as there is a morgue on-board. Entirely possible though that they were attempting to resuscitate the passenger, but at or immediately after docking the attempt was considered fruitless. Not trying to be morbid, but if I have to go (not that there are options about that), I'd rather die suddenly on a cruise, than linger in a cancer ward.

It is pretty common to have people die on a ship. It is kept quiet. With all the older people traveling on them it happens. My husband had his heart attack

when he was 49 on a business trip. So it can happen anytime any where.

I read in the newspaper Vegas has 50 heart attacks a day there. Again

the older people travel there too. I saw 4 people being transported by the rescue squad in casinos there one year. All Older adults.

I am almost one of the older adults. Won't keep me home.

A ship physician told me that on average there is one death per week on a ship.

I would like to see statistics on that. That seems pretty high. I tried to do a search and maybe there isn't accurate data online but the numbers I found weren't even close. But again, it would,be interesting to see valid numbers for that.

You mean globally one person dies on a ship every week? Or that each ship averages one death per week?

The first seems reasonable, the second not so much.

It has been so bad that RCL has employed a Red Cross hospital ship to sail behind their ships to evacuate. All they have to do is swing them over.......for if you look around at the ages of the typical passenger it is now required that they carry a copy of their will while cruising.:D

Considering the number of people who sail with chronic diseases none of this is very surprising. Chronic diseases easily decompensate when people are stressed from traveling, sleep deprived, eating more food, eating different food from what they are used to, changing physical activity level from what they are used to, suddenly find themselves in a hot environment, etc.

Cruising is a nice vacation for older people with issues. However, some of these people have stable, though rather fragile, medical issues that take little to push to the other side of the fence. Unfortunately, it happens and it is not rare.
