Vegas did not get built by giving too much money back to the punters.

Exactly. Those hotels were not built on the backs on winners.

Slightly related -- whenever I had seen a slot tournament -- the rope off a group of slot

machines, and then the machines are wired-up to pay off like crazy.

It never occured to me that the casino COULDN'T change the hold percentage.

In support of the OP, the slots are all now computerised and networked...and within payout probability ranges, the likelihood of a winning 'pull' in most casinos varies by time of day, day of week, location of the machine. Winning is still random, but the probability changes within the range by design to increase the likelihood that the machines will have someone in front of it continuing to feed it green!

Knowing this, I still play. Good harmless fun.

Can't wait until my February cruise!

The odds of any stop on any reel is the same irrespective of what shows on the reel. It's the combination of stops that is the payout probability.

Yes, games are computerized and what games show to be played can be changed on the fly (if a casino has that system) but that is the 'theme' of the game - not the hold percentages. Payout probabilities CANNOT be changed on the fly by a computer throughout the day.

And we can't blame the difference on any exchange rate, either! :- )

BTW, we love Canada. We honeymooned in Toronto 39 years ago and since I've been to every southern province at least once plus the Yukon. Guess I need to work on the NWT next.

And please take no offense but regarding the slots I know I am right... :- )

There is one slot machine in the casino that is 100 percent controlled and manipulated, in my opinion. The "Quarter Shooter" with the big tray that rakes and pushes quarters forward until they off the edge. I spend 2 weeks on the Island recently watching the "Bait" money being "Placed" along the edges so that people would play those machines at night. Im ok with placing bait, along as long it is not moved after that.

That's not a slot. It's technically a skill game with a random factor. And yes, the 'larger' prize payouts are manipulated. The coin payouts can't be as much because it depends on how people play over the day.

I can imagine the lineups to play it on the days that the ship is plowing through rough seas :D
