mostrow Posted December 30, 2014 #4 Share Posted December 30, 2014 On the Epic, it was opened when we got on at noon. It was my favorite place for a snack. Loved the chicken pot pies. So, unless they changed the times, I would for sure check it out.
ncklhaus Posted December 30, 2014 #5 Share Posted December 30, 2014 According to our Day 1 Freestyle Daily it is open except during the lifeboat drill.

3DBeach Posted December 30, 2014 #7 Share Posted December 30, 2014 We always love going to O'Sheehans after embarkation also. The buffet is usually super crowded. Sent using the Cruise Critic forums app

njhorseman Posted December 30, 2014 #9 Share Posted December 30, 2014 It varies by ship. While O'Sheehan's may be open for lunch on embarkation day on the newer, large ships such as Breakaway, it was not open on the Gem for lunch on embarkation day of our 12/1 cruise. IIRC it didn't open until about 5pm.
SliceOfLife Posted December 31, 2014 #10 Share Posted December 31, 2014 It was open during my Breakaway cruise and Getaway cruise.
Demonyte Posted December 31, 2014 #11 Share Posted December 31, 2014 As stated, it varies by ship and cruise. 24hr eateries on all ships should be open on embarkation but not always are. Personally I prefer going to MDR for embarkation day lunch, on all ships one MDR is open from noon to usually 2pm. While I learned that from here when we started cruising, for me it has become the ultimate "now the cruise actually starts"-moment.

Same, it's a great place to meet if you're cruising in a group as well. Every year we make a beeline for whichever MDR is open. The one exception was when we were on Royal Princess. Alfredo's was the perfect start to that cruise. I could see heading to O'Sheehans this year. The new menu looks pretty good. Sit down and enjoy that first meal and watch the others arrive, especially interesting to watch the first timers. "The cruise starts here." Rare Dorhead1230 Posted January 26, 2016 #18 Share Posted January 26, 2016 +1 vote for lunch in the MDR upon embarkation. I think it is the single best tip (among dozens and dozens!) that I have picked up over the years on CC. It is so relaxing, not crowded, and with the promo UBP you can also get that first "I'm on vacation!" drink without even having to wait at a bar [emoji4]. SeekerOne Posted January 26, 2016 #20 Share Posted January 26, 2016 Anybody know if it`s open on the Star, also 5`o clock somewhere? TIA Just off the star on sunday, O'Sheehans is open intermediately after boarding... 5'o clock was open at 4-5, but a word of caution on the star O'sheehans is located on deck 8 directly above the atrium on deck 7, you board deck 7, and go directly into the atrium with O'sheehans in sight and everyone was ordering bloody mary's by the dozen, was very very busy(only on embarkment day). i went up to the market cafe(buffet) it was moderately busy, but topsiders by the pool was deserted, I stayed there and ordered drinks(4) till cabins were ready and only a few passengers wandered thru. Rare shanefm3 Posted January 26, 2016 #21 Share Posted January 26, 2016 I use the MDR or O Sheehans purely for sanitary reasons. I got sick twice after eating at the buffet upon boarding , the last couple of cruises I chose to eat in a dining room and I've been fine. I just put it down to thousands of people waiting to board , touching god knows what in the terminal, them rushing to the buffet to eat. Just my humble opinion but I avoid the buffet as much as possible, Ive seen horrible manners there.
casofilia Posted January 26, 2016 #22 Share Posted January 26, 2016 On our first cruise we used the Buffet as we knew no better till about half way through. Since then we have never "eaten" in the buffet. While we may miss some of the special evenings we feel more "comfortable" in the MDR for every meal (or O'Sheehans if the MDR isn't open). It also seems that more people want to eat in the MDRs these days, a pity as they are getting busier!! Mike
bbryan5 Posted January 26, 2016 #23 Share Posted January 26, 2016 We always go to whichever main dinning room is open for lunch. Very small crowd. ;)

The crowds don't phase me (on ships with 4000+ people on board that's lucky) [emoji4]
Rare Dorhead1230 Posted January 26, 2016 #25 Share Posted January 26, 2016 I am usually done eating and on my second drink before you get your appetizers and first drink in the MDR. On Epic and Getaway it was I wonder if on the star it will be this bad I may want to go to Osheahans. I think it depends to some extent on when you sail, also. I am a teacher, so my boyfriend and I only sail in the summer, when the ships are at or beyond double-occupancy capacity. For example, we learned at the CC M&G that our Breakaway sailing last summer had 4,700 passengers on it! Under those circumstances, it's definitely a battle at the buffet on embarkation day no matter what. Even O'Sheehan's can get crazy because it's right where people get on the ship. On the other hand, a lot of people either don't know the MDR is open, or don't get on quite early enough to take advantage of the limited MDR lunch hours that day. We have never had a long wait for service, because we book through the casino and are always among the first people to sit down for lunch :). One sweet day, we will be able to sail during non-peak times :D. Until then, it's definitely a great way to avoid crowds on the packed sailings!
