Mallory215 Posted January 15, 2015 #1 Share Posted January 15, 2015 I am taking a 7 night western cruise on the Oasis of the Seas this summer and we have a big group. Since we don't want to pay for WIFI and/or phone service we were thinking of using walkie talkies. Has anyone every used them before? If so do they work well? Any specific brands you recommend? Thanks!

Thanks! I've seen people using the 2-way Walkies Talkies but the reception onboard the ship is so poor that sometimes are useless.. You can rent couple of dect phones once you get onboard... I believe is 20 to 25 each phone but works everywhere onboard and you can be reached easily... You can call the rooms, people can call you from any public phone around the ship... :D
cb at sea Posted January 15, 2015 #3 Share Posted January 15, 2015 Does everyone really want to lug those things around all the time? Really, if you make tentative plans the night before, you'll have no trouble finding each other. You can leave messages on the cabin phones, and you'll (no doubt) encounter each other at some point during the day. When we're with a "group", it's usually only dinner when we're all together. During the day, everyone does their own thing, pretty much! Sometimes, we'll all be in the same place at the same time....but not always! If some of us want to do the same thing, we've decided in advance, and know when and where to meet up.
clawmachine Posted January 15, 2015 #4 Share Posted January 15, 2015 Call your regular cell phone provider. It might be cheaper just to send a couple texts each day at $.50 each (my ATT rate for cruises) than to pay their phone rental fee. I heard they charge you some kind of outrageous fee for losing or breaking it..
P&O Lynn Knickers Posted January 15, 2015 #5 Share Posted January 15, 2015 Does everyone really want to lug those things around all the time? . Long before cell phones, people in groups used to dress the same. Looked so naff. You hardly need walkie talkies for a vacation, just relax and enjoy the moment . The intermittent reception and crosstalk from annoying teenagers put an end to that dumb idea pretty quickly.:)

Thanks! Yes, they should work just fine - avoid the cheap ones - get a decent brand. There may be other people on your channel, so you may have to hop around a bit to find one that isn't being used or used too much. Not usually a big problem but it happens. dave_cruiser Posted February 11, 2017 #8 Share Posted February 11, 2017 Long before cell phones, people in groups used to dress the same.Looked so naff. You hardly need walkie talkies for a vacation, just relax and enjoy the moment . Many families like us have tweens/teens with them who will want to spend time on their own on the ship. It's sure nice to be able to talk to them once in a while and find out what they're up to! Sure you can plan your whole day ahead of time and stick to a rigid schedule, but as you said, we like to relax and enjoy the moment! A nice set of 2-way radios allows us to play things by ear. Its most useful during days at sea... we don't even bring them on excursions since we stay together.

If you get decent ones, they work pretty well. Many have lots of different channels/subchannels so it's pretty easy to avoid interference from others. Some can even do texting. EverydayAdventure Posted February 12, 2017 #11 Share Posted February 12, 2017 You do not need them. Been on many cruises as a couple, with large family, and with friends. We always had times to meet up and our plans laid out. Plus phones on the deck floors. Most times you will run into each other on the ship. in addition, I read a poll that many cruises hate hearing walkie talkies onboard the ship. RocketMan275 Posted February 12, 2017 #12 Share Posted February 12, 2017 If you decide to take them, be sure and check the laws/regulations of the countries you visit before you take them off the ship. Some countries may not take kindly to them.
kinglew76 Posted February 12, 2017 #13 Share Posted February 12, 2017 I make note boards that are magnetic and stick to the door. Leave short message, that way others in our group will know where we are. We also get some entertaining messages from other passengers. :)
Pacificlander Posted February 12, 2017 #14 Share Posted February 12, 2017 You might want to look into Royal Q. I believe it's $7.95 per cell phone for entire cruise. You can text and call companions using your cell phones. Sent from my ASUS MeMO Pad 7 using Forums mobile app

pascalle3 Posted February 28, 2017 #17 Share Posted February 28, 2017 We just got back from the Oasis last week and our four family members used three Motorola walkie talkies from Costco. They worked surprisingly well, but of course with a ship that size there were some dead spots. Crosstalk was not an issue, just chose an unused channel and never needed to change it. But, others do bring up good points. Most of the time we found ourselves leaving notes in the cabin or on the cabin door, and the phone system throughout the ship made things even easier. Next time, I'll probably just leave the walkie talkies at home.
