Ship Geeks-Azipod Video

Thanks for sharing.

Quite informative.

Now, we can all relate as to why a drydock session is needed to attend to the (in)famous'' forward radial thrust bearing'' , the most common cause of the perhaps too frequent issues faced by all lines with azipods propulsion.

The size of the thing alone is humongous !! Removing it after it is found to ''wear out prematurely'' is definitely not a ''send the divers down there while we're docked at XYZ'' job....:D

I was fortunate to stand fairly close to a replacement job at a local yard some years ago.....we all looked like little ants compared to that huge

unit , all jacked up , and looking at the new bearing being hoisted in place...

Thanks:)

do we know what the actual problem was...design, materials, or just wear and tear?

cool video!

It could be many things. Seal leak, lub breakdown, contraction and expansion due to heat differentials, prop could be a little out of balance, bad batch of metal used. Something may have been damaged during assembly and wasn't noticed. In auto racing they will occassionally get a bad batch of material that will cause many engines on a race team to fail because of a common part used in all of them.

Happy cruising 🌊🚢🇺🇸🌞
