I agree...I always love to wander aimlessly in a destination.

Venice is at its most fascinating during Carnival, but that would be too early in the year for an Azamara ship to be in the Med.

Ride the vaparettos at night, too. Venice is even more magical at night from the water; plus, the big cruise ship tourists are gone.

Take the vaporetto over to the Lido - it's a lovely, mostly open in the summertime island with some great resorts and beautiful homes.

 

Also, while wandering, check out the lobby of the Danieli hotel. And head to the Castello Sestiere - it's largely residential, has relatively few tourists wandering through and has the largest boulevard in Venice, Via Garibaldi, which is lined with small shops and restaurants. There are several lovely gardens to check out, too.

I *love* this suggestion! I bet seeing Venice this way, or in a kayak, would be so memorable!

There is an outfit that kayaks the canals. We were set to go out on a trip, but it got cancelled because of pending storms.

Google 'kayak Venice' and you should find it.

You can also book and DIY the "Secrets Tour of the Doges Palace".

 

If you pre-book online this tour both gets you past all the queues as you go to collect your tickets, gives you full entry into the Palace and then takes you to areas that aren't available to be seen otherwise.

 

We did this in 2010 and the tour is excellent and great value for money.
