Chops Price Increase to $39

I booked chops maybe three weeks ago for the Oasis and it was $35- maybe I just made it before the hike?

I did it for the kids as I think even $35 is a lot. We are at the Crown grill last month on Princess and $25 got me a porterhouse and a lot of lobster tails. I think CCL charges $35, but they use prime beef.

There are no sacred cows on RCI now, just cash cows and sadly they're really starting to annoy me. I like RCI's product. When I look for a cruise, RCI website is the first place I go to but not anymore. Their tricks and scams are pushing me towards other lines and maybe this is what they want. Perhaps their ships are too full, their specialty restaurants too full. It would appear they are driving away customers for a reason, its the only conclusion I can draw from their tricks.

I totally agree. I feel that every booking is a challenge, and at almost every opportunity they have some kind of scam going on. I used to feel like a valued customer. Now I feel like target in a big con trick, and it's not a nice feeling. Loyal to Royal? No way.

That's sterching it. $25 was a good deal. $30 was fine. $35 is pushing it. $39 is too much for Chops....QUOTE]

I would certainly agree. We have taken several RCCL cruises and have always dined in Chops on the first formal night as we just do not like the aura of the MDR on those nights. We always had terrific service and meals in Chops, but now RCCL has become greedy and is pushing the envelope.

We are booked for a RCCL cruise in less than two months and were considering at least two nights in Chops as it is a thirteen night repo cruise. Now we shall skip Chops and join those who are reliving their high school proms in the MDR.

For goodness sake all you tight wads whining about $35 dollar meals. You are on a holiday, enjoy it. On a 14 night cruise we ate at the restaurants 8 times. Loved it. Enjoyed the change of scenery. Food great. It's nice to get dressed up and have an intimate dinner, rather than with the hoards of people at the Windjammer. Spend your money, you can't take it with you.

I have to work quite a few hours to earn $35, I'm choosy how I spend my hard earned and f I don't feel like it's a value it doesn't make me cheap.

$35 for a nice meal on vacation is fine with me. We rarely go out to eat at home so that is part of vacationing for me. We have booked 5 specialty restaurants for our upcoming cruise. Dh and I are celebrating our 15th wedding anniversary and our first trip away from the kids in 7 years so we are going to enjoy it! Admittedly my expectations for chops is very low but oh well. We have also each purchased the ultimate drink package. You won't find us spending hundreds in the casino though! I'd much rather have a nice meal than blow money on slot machines.

Our Chops experiences have been very positive and the deserts are to die for. "Chops Night" has become a tradition for us and we'll probably pay a little more to continue on. It is priced along the lines of better restaurants in our city.

We usually get a window table and you just can't beat the view!

I think that some folks are just not going to spend any extra money for anything on a cruise, no mattter if its $5.95 at Johnnie Rockets or $35 or $39 at Chops which is fine. We budget specialty restaurants into our cruise vacation money for a couple of times a cruise, not becase we don't like the MDR, but we just like doing something different to make our cruise special for us. We don't eat at 5 star steak house restaurants all the time, but enjoy Texas Roadhouse or Outback as much as we enjoy a night at Ruth Chris or Morton's. We haven't been to Chops yet with the new menu, but if we go and don't like it, we won't go again, just the same as we don't go back to land based restaurants if we don't like them. But to each his own... No Biggie!

Whenever I lament what something is going to cost I always relate it to how many hands of Blackjack it equals. :o

I do the same but compare it to a fill up of gas. If it costs less than to fill up my Jeep with gas... then no problem ;-)

Maybe it's me, but what's all the hype with these pay for restaurants. I know it's none of my business what people do with their money, but we find the MDR food to be very good. This is just my opinion so no flaming please.

Not just you! I don't go on a cruise for stellar 5 star dining at the price we pay. I've always liked the MDR food on Royal, Princess, Celebrity and  Carnival! We love to travel as often as possible, so we normally don't spend the extra money for the specialty restaurants - leaves more for our next trip! For those who choose to go, it's a nice alternative. It's all about choice, and I choose the MDR.

It all comes down to what one considers worth their while. Is the price point or something all together something they are willing to spend extra money on?

I for one would probably not pay $6.00 per person to eat hamburgers at a fast food restaurant (Johnny Rockets). To me its not worth even paying that amount. However, I have and probably will spend $25-$40 pp to have a nice meal with my wife at a specialty restaurant. One night during the cruise. Probably more if that's something she wants to do.

We would probably spend some extra money on ala carte sushi.

We rather use our money on shore excursions and other non-food related things.

The food in the MDR even though just ok, still comes with a fun experience. There is the three courses and good service. There is usually something on the menu that's good to eat. If not, there are 6 nights to get it right or wrong. It's still a fun experience.

It all just comes down to priorities and what people are willing to spend on a particular thing.

I don't fault Royal or any other cruise line for specialty restaurants. If the market will bear a higher cost then who can blame Royal or other for the higher cost?

Or, you could save it for something that has more value than an upgraded steak.

I am always amazed at how many people there are that feel qualified to tell strangers how to spend their money.

... plus the lost free meal for the Chops' experience and side dishes.

Technically, you can still eat at the MDR, even if you do Chops that same evening...Don't forget the Windjammer and Park/Promenade Cafe!

Just sayin'...not like I do that or anything...ok, maybe sometimes I do...don't judge!

Does anyone know the prices for kids? It mentions being reduced but for our March trip our kids aged 11 & 13 were showing up as full price? 35.00.. Hopefully not..

From Royals Web Site:

Are children allowed to dine in our Specialty Restaurants?

A: Children younger than 13 must be accompanied by an adult. Plus, kids ages 6-12 now dine at our specialty restaurants for only $8, and kids 5 and under eat free! Little sailors get their very own menu – a round-up of kid-friendly favorites from the "grownups" menu. Reservations can be made online or onboard at the restaurant based on availability.

So it appears your 13 year old would be charged full price

Your 11 year old - has to order from the kids menu I would think to get the $8 pricing - if they order from the regular menu - they too are charged full price

Since they don't know what your child will order - you are initially charged full price

Once on board, should your 11 year old qualify for the $8 charge - my thought is you would be given a credit to your account for the difference.
