Alcohol

...They've bubble wrapped them and then used zip ties to lock their suitcase. has this worked for anybody else?

Speaking about Royal Caribbean, no hard liquor is permitted to be brought onboard. At embarkation only the first day, you are allowed 2 x 750 ml. of wine per cabin (not per person). Any other alcohol will indeed be seized.

The zip ties to lock a suitcase mean nothing; all luggage is x-rayed for prohibited items and if there is any question, that luggage will be held and the owners notified to come and open it for inspection.

You might consider buying one of the beverage packages if you think you might drink a lot of alcohol.

It should be noted that the alcohol MAY be seized IF it is discovered. Often it is allowed through either because it is not seen or because they don't want to fool with the effort it takes to seize it.

Chances of the liquor getting through are not good - bags are x-rayed and any bag that looks like it has a bottle inside is taken to the "naughty room." You will be called to identify your bag and the liquor will be confiscated. It may be returned to you when you disembark (I believe it has to be unopened and in original container for this to happen). Not a good way to begin a cruise.

They are really getting much stricter on this - it is not worth the trouble. You can take two bottles of wine on board.
