OBC for Military vets

 Share

Recommended Posts

As far as I know Princess is the only cruise line that grants a military OBC. When that was established the CEO of Princess was a Viet Nam veteran (he was a grunt!) and really big on veterans organizations particularly those that specialized in VN vets. He has since that time been promoted to Carnival corporate.

Carnival had a military sale on veterans day and I converted my reservation to the Military rate so they do offer it from time to time.

Must be newish as I did not get any OBC when I sailed Princess back in 2010.

Actually it is not new. I love the obc that Princess offers to vets. Here is what the offer is.

Military OBC amount per Cruise length qualified passenger

6 days or less $50

7–13 days $100

14 days or longer $250

The program is available to active military, retired military and disabled military veterans with proper identification in the following service divisions: United States Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, National Guard or Reserves, Canadian National Defense and the British Army, Royal Marines, Royal Navy, Royal Air Force or Reserves.

Both the wife and I are vets and start each Princess trip with $200 OBC. How's that for a big Thank You??

Just dh is eligible for military obc. Our last Princess cruise was 14 days so we received $250 obc. If we both would have be a veteran we would have received $500 obc. That is a heck of a military program in my book!

Our last two cruises were military and I received $50.00 obc.

That is because Carnival was running a military special. Carnival does run a military special every once in a while that has military obc. Carnivals is a special promotion that is only for a short period, unlike Princess who gives military credit on every cruise all the time.

Carnival offers a Military rate on many of the cruises. There was one on both of our past cruises and the rate on our current cruise is $100/pp less for the Military rate than for the Go Sale. Not even letting Carnival pick your room is cheaper. Last August my parents cruise was $300 less than ours - we booked same cabin type at same time - the difference was the Military rate (we don't qualify). Also, you only needed one in the cabin to qualify (my mom isn't a Vet). I think that Carnival is very generous with their (well deserved) thank-you to our Military. A cheaper cruise always out trumps OBC in my book - I can spend that savings any way I want!

By the way... none of our cruises were booked during a Military Special - we just booked the Military rate list under other rates.

Well, all I can say is that it wasn't automatic (yes, they knew I was military) and they never said a word about it being available when I was on the Emerald so I didn't ask. That's okay, doesn't keep me from wanting to go on Princess and it's good to know for the future.

I could be reading it wrong - but it doesn't sound like Princess offers the OBC to ALL Veterans - just retired or disabled Veterans. Sounds like if you were a Vietnam Vet but didn't actually retire from the military or disabled from the military, you wouldn't qualify. By the way, no matter what your status is in relation to Princess policy, I thank you for your service!

It is for honorable discharge vets also:

Veterans with an honorable discharge

Veterans with an honorable discharge serving a minimum of 2 years or 6 months in an active war zone , or an educational discharge if within 90 days of their normal separation date in any of the applicable service divisions listed above.

Please provide a copy of the following: U.S.: DD 214. Please ensure that Social Security Number has been crossed out. Canada: VAC (Veterans Affairs Canada) Health Identification Card UK: Appropriate proof of service issued by the MOD

Great. It should definitely include all Veterans! That first paragraph after the title is a bit misleading. If I was booking a cruise with Princess I wouldn't have thought that my dad would qualify! Guess that's why you have to read all the fine print.

One major selling point for me regarding military rates is the cancellation policy. With international travel it's difficult getting a packet together and approved sometimes. In fact on our last two cruises we weren't 100% sure it'd get approved until the day of departure.

Getting leave approved isn't difficult but finding a Colonel to sign off on paperwork to travel to Mexico can be fun, especially when they are in Kuwait!

We always wait and book when we get either a military discount or casino discount. We have saved quite a bit with the military discount. Just check your VIFP section on carnival and the click on the military section. But, the first time we used it we booked over the phone and the PVP helped us with the discount. All we had to do was send a copy of his DD14 once, now we just see it on the website when there is a discount.
