One person in room needs to cancel for medical reasons

They have the insurance so no probem there; what happens however to the other person booked in the room. They are two adult females not related. Can the other person still travel at the price they made final payment on. Will the cruise line try to put a stranger in the room with them. Anyone with any experience with this. Thanks,

We probably have the same situation coming up. TA told us that solo person will not have to pay extra nor share room. My Mom (who is going to miss cruise) paid cruise line, so they have their money. Insurance will reimburse Mom directly.

They never put people in your cabin. You paid for it.

 

As to the original post. Were there 2 or 3 people booked to start with?

 

Often, they still expect payment for a double (2 per cabin).

 

Need a bit more detail.

If they both made final payment, the person sailing will not have to pay anything extra.

 

If before final payment than the person sailing would have to change to solo pricing.

 

The person that can't make it should get taxes back from the cruise line and fare from insurance.

They would never put a stranger in the room, the person can travel solo. They should not have to pay anything extra. Just be very careful when they actually cancel that they specify that only one person is cancelling, not both. There was a thread just this past week that one person cancelled but the cruise line cancelled the entire cabin. They were able to get the situation resolved but the original cabin was gone.

We had this situation once, daughter didn't incur any additional charges for her cabin and traveled solo. Sick passenger was refunded all of her portion of the cabin except what she had paid for the insurance.

Only want to add it depends how far after final payment they are...the cabin will end up re-priced to single and any monies kept by the line applied to that pricing. I will add based on the cabin fare contracted for this cabin, not at new pricing levels. If within the last couple weeks when no refunds would be given insurance pays out the pax and no other money needs to change hands, before that the line can refund some to the pax and insurance the rest, then the remaining pax files a claim as well for the extra cost incurred.

 

I know this from personal experience. We were in last two weeks when MIL had a minor CVA. Filed both claims at the same time and no money had to change hands, just the check from insurer to MIL for her cruise fare even though we had paid her fare (that is just how the insurer cut the check) and a refund from cruise line to my CC for the taxes paid. (MIL was lucky her situation was a mild CVA and she is pretty much back to normal considering age.)

 

Hope the OP family/friends are all back to good health quickly.

Thank you all so much. We are six weeks out from the trip. One of the women may not be able to come due to severe asthma and respiratory issues. Just wanted to make sure that the other lady traveling with her would not get stuck now having to pay for a solo cabin. Final payment was made in January. Everyone has insurance so they should be okay. It is difficult when you plan on a fabulous trip and can't make it due to illness.
