Premier Inn West Quay

Recommended Posts

We are staying one night at the Premier Inn West Quay before our cruise end of June. Was wondering if there are any good pubs in the area. Do not want to eat dinner at the hotel.

We always stay there pre-cruise and there are lots of decent paces to eat within walking distance. The Duke of Wellington gets good reviews in TripAdvisor and is only 10 minutes walk away and we ate at The Platform last year. We're not great fans of pub grub but others from our roll call (there were 20 of us there) really enjoyed it.

Duke of Wellington. in Bugle Street, is an obvious choice - a good blend of character, quality & service.

Red Lion in High St is steeped in history, great atmosphere, food OK, service patchy.

Standing Order is a little further up High Street. A Wetherspoons pub & pretty typical of the brand, so rather basic but cheap.

The Platform Tavern on Platform Road (a continuation of Town Quay) is a bit spit n sawdust, usually has music, good atmosphere, food OK.

A new venue at the bottom of Bugle Street, opposite Royal Pier. Folk may remember the little Maritime Museum in the 13th Century stone Wool House.

Since the opening of the new Sea City museum at the Civic Centre, the Wool House has been changed to a pub, incorporating a micro-brewery behind the bar. Super building, well fitted-out, good atmosphere. But the menu is very deliberately "pie & mash" pub food. Nice place, have stopped by for a drink a couple of times, haven't eaten there yet.

Plenty of restaurants dotted around, & a cluster of them in Oxford Street - about a 15 to 20 minute walk.

We also really liked the Platform where we dined with tartanexile81 and our cc group, and had a good lunch at the Wellington. We'll be sailing out of Southampton again in August, and we'll definitely be dining at both pubs.

Thanks for the restaurant suggestions. This will be our first time staying in Southampton. Is there a place to buy wine?

Hi CruisePrincess6,

I also wondered about a wine store while staying at Premier Inn before our British Isles cruise in August. I checked around and found the Majestic Wine Store. I googled the address and the distance might be walkable, but if we buy too much wine, it might be cumbersome.;)

Here is the website www.majestic.co.uk.southampton. Upon your return, let us know if it is worth going there.

Thanks for the names ofwine stores. Does anyone know how strict they are about bringing more than 2 bottles of wine when boarding a Princess ship in Southampton?

We cruised in January from Los Angeles and took on six bottles of wine. Two were free and after you go through Princess security, they send you to a desk where you show them your other bottles of wine and pay $15 corkage each. They stamp each bottle and you take them with you onboard. We did not, however, take any of the stamped bottles to the dining room. We always buy at least one bottle at dinner. We save the extra bottles to drink in our cabin with friends before we go to dinner.

My understanding is that the stamp which shows previous payment keeps the waiter from adding it to your bill.

Marks and Spencers, 5 mins walk have some great wines. They always have some on offer.

I s this a new thing? When we cruised with Princess there was no restriction on bringing wine and beer for the canin. They did charge corkage if you wanted it at the dinner table though.

We did the same on a Princess out of Sydney :)

Took a bottle to dinner each evening, no additional charge beyond the $15 per bottle, no problem.

If you want to buy a half-doz bottles or more, then Majestic is the obvious choice. But six bottles (can be mixed) is their minimum purchase.

A wine specialist, they have a far better selection than the grocery stores and knowledgeable staff. Located opposite the rail station, a ten minute level walk from Premier Inn West Quay.

Thanks scottie99 for this information. We will probably check this out first before trying Majestic.

Hi Bob++

It's not really new. It was always the rule but never enforced. Princess cracked down in 2014. When we went on a two week cruise to the Caribbean years ago, we took an entire case of wine and put a luggage tag label on it and it was delivered to our stateroom with no problem. I miss those days!

Luckily we were warned before our last cruise so we were prepared to pay. It is still cheaper than buying Princess wine!

Since this will be our first European cruise in awhile, I hope their treatment of extra wine is the same as in the States.

As far as I know, there is no restriction on water or soft drinks. You can still bring a case of each onboard.

Hi,I've just booked RCCL Explorer leaving 3rd June and coming down from Scotland the day before by train. Am thinking of booking the Premier Inn as it fits the bill for one night.

Am just wondering if it's walkable to the port from the hotel or will I need to order a taxi. Am hoping our luggage won't be to heavy, but seeing as there's no weight restriction on the train . . . . . . . . . .

Thanks in advance.

It's a ten minute walk from Premier Inn West Quay to RCI's usual berth at City Cruise Terminal (berth 101). Cut thro the carpark of Holiday Inn to avoid an unnecessary dogleg.

About a ten to fifteen minute walk from Southampton Central to the hotel.

In both cases it's level ground with pavements & traffic lights to get you across the roads.

In case of inclement weather, or having a box--car of luggage, or being just plain bone-idle ;), there's a taxi rank at the rail station & hotel can call you a taxi to the terminal. No more than £7 each time.

M&S are currently offering a 25% discount if you buy 6 or more bottles. Also, the majority of their bottles are screw tops, so easy to re-seal, in the unlikely event that you have any left over once opened. Also, no problem of paying $15 corkage only to find the wine is 'corked' when you open it!

JB, my DH has, for no other reason than it's nearer the train station, booked the Ibis! Am going on the 'it's only a bed for the night' thought, but was wondering if it's still within walking distance of the port - ie can you get into the port from that end or would we be better getting a taxi?

Thanks in advance!

Yes, he can get into the port via gate 10 (Southern Road), which is more convenient from the Ibis. 10 - 15 minute walk.

But you can use Gate 8, cos that's easier from Premier Inn West Quay.

Or did I misunderstand your post? :D

Most of the uk wine places have on-line stores you can check what might be available in store and guide to price.

Don't have handy links and on phone so will try to remember later.

This might be of interest to those who are interested in purchasing a minimum of six bottles of wine from Majestic Wines which I previously mentioned in an above post. You might check to see if it is possible to deliver to your hotel of choice within the local around surrounding the ports at Southampton. Just a thought!;)

Here is a list of their wines for purchase: https://www.majestic.co.uk/wine
