Elegant night dress code (Dream)

Can someone help settle a dispute I am having on FB?

John Heald posted a story about people being reported for wearing jeans to the MDR during formal night. I could swear that when I was on the Dream in April that jeans WERE allowed on elegant night. Short, cut off jeans, flip flops, tshirts, etc were not allowed but no where did it simply say jeans. I remember checking and re-checking before going to dinner. I wore jeans both elegant nights and saw many people in jeans and no one ever said a word to us.

Other people insist jeans are not allowed.

I found a Fun Times saying no jeans on the Dream but it is from 2014. Does anyone have a more recent one from elegant night? I went during Spring Break, would they go a little more casual during Spring Break sailings, perhaps?

I am sure jeans were allowed, I know they were.

Is this done different depending on the ship?

I also thought "nice" jeans were allowed. Are there any details about which kind of jeans were turned away??

Do we know if it was a man or a woman wearing the jeans??

A couple in designer jeans. She claims she paid $550 for hers! Yikes

Here is a link to the FAQ on Carnival and it says NO JEANS on formal nights.

http://www.carnival.com/CMS/FAQs/Dress_Attire.aspx

Cruise Elegant Dining Dress Code: Gentlemen - Dress slacks, dress shirts. We also suggest a sport coat. If you wish to wear suits and ties or tuxedos, by all means we invite you to do so. Ladies - Cocktail dresses, pantsuits, elegant skirts and blouses; if you‘d like to show off your evening gowns, that's great too!

Not permitted in the dining room during the Cruise Elegant dinner for ladies and gentlemen: shorts, gym shorts, T-shirts, beach flip-flops, bathing suit attire, jeans, cut-off jeans, sleeveless shirts for men, sportswear, and baseball hats.

It doesn't say anything about an exception if your jeans cost more than most people's dresses.

Edit: Looks like the post above me edited while I posted. Sorry for the repeat info.

I need to find my Fun Times from the April cruise. I promise you they took out the part where it says jeans are not permitted. Maybe it was because it was a Spring Break cruise or maybe the Dream has a more lax policy. I know it wasn't there. I'm back on her in 3 weeks so I am going to take a photo of the Fun Times and post when I get back. Then we will know if the Dream has a slightly different policy or if it was just different during the SB cruise.

this

This is directly from the May 11 , 2015 Dream. the first Elegant night funtimes

"Oh-la-la! Sometimes it's fun to get all dolled up and debonair on vacation. We know you'll look totally swanky, but please note that the following attire is not allowed in the restaurants: cut-off jeans, men's sleeveless shirts, shorts, t-shirts, sportswear, baseball hats, flip-flops and bathing suit attire.

So there you have it...as long as the jeans are not cut offs, they are allowed.:)

LOl @ Carnival saying both yes and no. FAQ says no but the above from May 11 on the Dream says yes.

Just what is the official verdict? I am guessing the individual ships determine the standard?

It is different I think based on ship and time of year. Don't know for sure but I have posted a picture here before of the fun times where it stated shorts were okay on elegant night.

The real "intrigue" from that FB post from J. Heald was not the cost of the jeans or wether or not jeans were allowed in the MDR...it's wether or not she went on the cruise with her husband or boyfriend?!?!?!

My Father-in-Law was turned away from wearing nice, dark wash jeans with a collard shirt and blazer on the second elegant night on the Glory.

They were very nice and apologetic about it. They simple said jeans were not allowed on elegant nights and they would have to ask him to change into khakis or dress pants.

Since he was ok with not eating in the dining room, he and my mother-in-law went to the buffet and then the Casino where mother-in-law hit $1,500.00 on the slots. Sometimes things happen for a reason. :)

As a side note: Longer, dress shorts are not allowed on men in the steakhouse. My DH found that out the hard way on the same cruise. He really wanted steak so he was happy to change.

I hope it doesn't change depending on time of year. I'm not planning on packing khakis and will be upset if suddenly jeans aren't allowed. I guess I will put a pair in the suitcase just in case. The inconsistency sure is consistent, isn't it?

Not sure about the "Rule" on jeans but they wouldn't be an option for me on Elegant night. Just MO....

I, personally, mostly don't care what people wear as long as it isn't torn, dirty or has some nasty slogan on the front of a tee shirt. I do feel though that if there is a dress code, it should be followed or it should be eliminated. It can't be both ways.

By the way, I think she went with her boyfriend AND her husband. Probably her husband wore appropriate clothing, but not so the "rich" boyfriend.

Good point...I think that nails it.

EXACTLY! This is my reply every time Heald has a question about it - either enforce your rule, or drop the rule.

And, the problem with saying "nice" jeans are allowed is that nice is subjective - what some people find nice, others might not.
