Lifelong Canon to Sony - Can I Get There From Here?

Not having much luck selling the kit, so I dropped the price and added the"make an offer" option - so we'll see I guess.

Also am contacting B&H's used dept. to see if they will bite on a trade.

If nothing happens this week, it must be karma telling me to be happy with what I have.:)

What is in the kit you are selling?

It's a T5i body with the 18-55 kit lens, then a Canon 50mm 1.8, a Canon 10-18 IS, and a Tamron 70-200 2.8 (non is) plus an older XS body, flash, filters, etc.

I'm very pleased with it, but the thought of the capable Sony and just 2 lenses is very attractive - if it works out.

Are you very far from Alberqurque?

I know someone who may be interested, I will email him.

Welp, I done gone and done it...

Got a deal an a Sony factory refurbished a6000 with the 16-50 and 55-210 lens for $629.00 with no tax and free shipping. I added a 3 year warranty with oops coverage for another 80.00.

Seller has outstanding ratings, 30 day "no questions asked" return policy w/ free return shipping - to save 300.00 it is worth giving it a try.

Re-listed all the Canon gear separately on the auction site and I'll just wait it out - in the end I'll be money ahead - it just might take a while.

B&H offered a whole $850 for everything - pass...

Sounds like a good deal on the Sony, but whenever I hear what friends in US pay for camera gear I go green with envy.

If you like wide angel zoom, look at the Sony 10-18mm f/4 OSS Alpha E-mount Wide-Angle Zoom Len. I have this lens, love it for travel, little expensive but cover the wide angel range.

Also just bought, because of the high DXO rating and the range the

SEL2870 FE 28–70mm F3.5-5.6 OSS e-mount Full Frame, which on our A6000 is 45mm to 105mm.

Rokinon 12mm f/2.0.

I really like having a wide angle lens for interiors in particular (European cathedrals, you name it). The "kit" lens that I already have is 16-50. So the issue in terms of the two lenses recommended above (apart from the cost differential, which is not insignificant) primarily is the difference between 10mm and 12mm (the equivalent of about 15mm v. 18mm on the a6000) and the f/2.0 on the Rokinon.

I know that at the wide end these small mm differences are not as small as they seem; I would love thoughts on one of these lenses v. the other (apart from cost).

Thanks!

I chose the 12mm f/2.0 over the 10mm f/2.8 by researching samples and review articles. I ended up with the 12mm because I liked the somewhat lower distortion and the fact that it was said to be very sharp wide open (wanted a wide sky lens). The excellent in-camera panorama and PS merge to panorama lessens my need for ultra-ultra wide.

I have also researched the 10-18 zoom pretty extensively and it gets excellent marks as well.

For me, the final flip of the switch came when the Rokinon 12mm went on sale for $299. I will spend the extra for a decidedly better product but when all other things are pretty even, show me the money!

After having the 12mm for a while, I can vouch for its excellent build and sharpness.

Thanks Dave for the very helpful feedback.

I guess another difference between the lenses is that the Rokinon is manual focus... Been reading up on focus peaking on the a6000! :)

I have Peaking set at yellow/medium. I also set the front custom button (next to the shutter release) to focus magnification for easy access. Focusing with the 12mm wide open is a bit more picky than at f/5.6 or f/8 but it is very easy and fast with peaking for quick shots and magnifying for shots where you have time to focus critically.

Manual focus on the 12mm and the 8mm fisheye is very easy. The large depth of field is very forgiving and once you get used to not being spoiled by autofocus, you'll appreciate the extra attention it forces you to give to a shot.

Bottom line: Fun!

Nice, crispy panorama..

Cut from this shot with the 12mm wide open.

Judicious use of the fisheye makes the distortion work well in the image

Or, just embrace the curves!

Watch B&H and Amazon for sales. the 12mm f/2 was $269 for one day last week and the 8mm f/2.8 fisheye regularly shows up in the low $200s

Dave, I love those photos!

Thanks for all the advice above, including the sale-watching tip. Wow, at $269 that would be a no brainer.

I think I read you are wanting to move to a more compact solution......If you are looking to sell give keh.com a call, I buy alot of equipment from them.

Also just a random thought I was on a cruise in march 2014 and used pretty much one camera (Nikon) and my travel lens a 18-200. It wasn't hard to carry or deal with. Here are a few low res copies off of my friends facebook. I am at work or I could directly load the higher quality copies. Majority were taken with the 18-200 lens and a d300s.

These were with the little Nikon aw110

Again they are displaying as sharp since she only has the low res compressed copies.

As long as you are familiar with the camera you can take almost any photo you'd want.

Would you mind sharing where you found your refurb deal, please? I'm not having much luck and especially at the price you got. Thanks!

If you go to the "popular" online auction site, search "Sony a6000 refurbished". You get an auction that lists it for $629. I don't think I'm supposed to post the exact link here, so if you don't find it let me know - I'm looking at it now it says the price is good for another 17 hours - don't know if that's a sales ploy or jot...

Also, it came with the Sony camera bag, an SD card, strap, charger - very pleased with it so far. It just arrived a few hours ago and I'm at work so not much time to play yet...

Aaaand done!

Got paid for the 50mm finally, and the T5i sold - so that's it - done! After fee's, buying a couple UV filters, extra battery and wall charger - and of course the new camera - I cleared just over 420.00.

Everybody won - I got fair value for my stuff and it found new useful homes, and I got my downsized but up-spec'd new kit.
