loubetti Posted August 22, 2015 #26 Share Posted August 22, 2015 Um...That only works when the ship is traveling south. Speaking of that, and this does not apply to most cruises, the word is "POSH". Port Out Starboard Home, forget other definitions you get for POSH. It had to do with liner voyages from England to south Africa, decades ago, before ships were air conditioned. If you wanted to stay cool in your cabin, that is how you tried to book- POSH. Otherwise, and smoking aside, it does not really matter. At times ships will pull in on one side, or back in on the other. There is no guarantee.
beachbum53 Posted August 22, 2015 #27 Share Posted August 22, 2015 Is there any specific reason why one would choose a room on starboard vs port side? If it's an inside cabin, it makes no difference at all. If it's an ocean view, well, the ocean looks pretty much the same on one side as it does on the other. And if it's a balcony cabin, and you're a sports fisherman, it depends on which side of the ship the fish are biting best. ;):D
Martini Mom Posted August 22, 2015 #28 Share Posted August 22, 2015 You never know how the ship will pull into port, but we've been very lucky booking port side cabins and have had great views. :)
losijon Posted August 23, 2015 #29 Share Posted August 23, 2015 Starboard every time and we've always gotten lucky and had the best views
Surrealistic Posted August 23, 2015 #30 Share Posted August 23, 2015 Both are good! Enjoy your cruise. :D
oceanmom62 Posted August 24, 2015 #31 Share Posted August 24, 2015 Um...That only works when the ship is traveling south. And that is the direction we generally travel. We usually have 1 or 2 sea days where we travel north but for the most part we are headed south.
justusfour2014 Posted August 24, 2015 #32 Share Posted August 24, 2015 haha, I prefer port side for the same reason! Exactly, but now that makes three of us which is odd! Ha!
cucruizin Posted August 24, 2015 #33 Share Posted August 24, 2015 Is there any specific reason why one would choose a room on starboard vs port side? Port side balcony for southern itinerary. You'll be heading back north on the return trip and will have some beautiful sunsets from your balcony.
GUT2407 Posted August 24, 2015 #34 Share Posted August 24, 2015 We did. On a one way from San Francisco to Vancouver, we wanted morning sun/afternoon shade on the balcony. We picked the starboard side for this reason. Back to the days of P.O.S.H. But no other reason, the ship could dock any way around and most itineraries there are very few places you can see land from the ship.
GUT2407 Posted August 24, 2015 #35 Share Posted August 24, 2015 Our first few cruises were all Port side and I sort of got a taste for it, but it honestly doesn't matter most of the time.
summersigh Posted August 24, 2015 #36 Share Posted August 24, 2015 When we begin "getting serious" :) about booking a specific cruise we google its ports of call for images. We look at lots of photos and finally go with the odds on which side will have the view we want most most often. For example ,,,,, we'd google: images Phillipsburg cruise port A whole section will come up that's nothing but images. Remember .... you're going with the odds :D The captain can "park" the ship any way he wants.
