You have to have Beignets at Cafe Du Monde in the French Market

You have to have a Hurricane at Pat O'Briens

You have to have charbroiled oysters at Drago's

You have to have a Po Boy. My preference is the debris po boy at mother's...I also get a side of jerry's jambalaya there.

There are also some good burgers in new orleans. If you venture to the far edge of bourbon street...and a couple blocks to the left Port of Call has good burgers. Drink a monsoon if you go there. Or if you want to stay closer Yo mama's has great burgers across from Pat O'Briens.

Some cool bars I would checkout:

Lafitte's blacksmith shop - oldest building in america currently used as a bar

Carousel Bar - spinning bar in hotel monteleone

Napoleon House - was supposed to be Napoleon's house but he never made it.

Looks like your food & drinks are covered :D. Last Summer, we took a wonderful walking tour of the French Quarter with FreeTours by Foot

We also enjoyed the Katrina exhibit in the Cablido museum next to St. Louis Cathedral. Go visit a cemetery too - some require a tour guide. See http://www.saveourcemeteries.org/

We're not big eaters or drinkers really so not sure there's much on that list we'd want to do. Any more suggestions as we've got an overnight there that may make a difference to what everyone suggests

Thank you, Saint Greg! I worked in NOLA (and elsewhere in LA) for MONTHS and didn't know about some of these places! I've added them all to my "short list" for our upcoming post AQ Civil War history cruise days in NOLA! Hubs is a chef (& I am, thus, his "foodie" LOL), so we are ALWAYS looking for great food recommendations- so if you have any other ideas PLEASE post them! :-) If you were going to do a "foodie walking tour" or something similar, which one(s) would you do??? Best live music? Best bars? Best places for historic NOLA? I know, I'm a pain! LOL

I will say we had glorious food at Antoine's... & fab oysters basically everywhere we went! I think there is a law stating it's impossible to eat badly in LA... The sign "anything you want, fried, $4" always meant Really good food! :-)

Have you ever had district donuts? I look at their twitter even when I'm not in town just to look at the donuts they have that day.

https://twitter.com/DistrictDonuts

I pretty much limited my list to places people could walk to from downtown. Some other places I like:

http://www.donutsandsliders.com/#about

http://www.crepecaterer.com/

http://pizzadelicious.com/ - Pepperoni Rolls

http://www.thecompanyburger.com/ ***Apparently they just opened one in the CBD this week. Add that location to the list you can walk to now****

For live music try to get to Frenchmen Street

While the OP has cruised, the question is timeless. We went two years ago, and we are going again in 38 days-going back to Mothers and the French Market.

We did enjoy the WWII museum, we stayed at the Staybridge Suites, and we will be staying there again.

This time for something new to see for us, we will go to a service at the church, and we will go to the Aquarium. And because we now know how much fun just wandering around is, we wont be in such a rush. Cruise Happy!

and Saint Greg, thanks for all the info, going back to read some about the places you listed.

We stayed out in the Garden District at the Prytania Park Hotel. They offer free parking there and you can leave your car there while cruising. Its a 10 minute trolley ride to the French Quarter.

We did a Haunted History Tour which was great and we ate at a Jazz Brunch at the Court of Two Sisters. They food was out of this world!!

Our "go-to" place for breakfast prior to boarding is Hobnobbers. However, on our next cruise, we leave on a Sunday and Hobs is closed. So, looking for a breakfast spot. We are staying at the Doubletree just a short walk from Mother's, which we've been to many times and is great. But looking at other close options....has anyone been to Daisy Dukes and, if so, how was it. And what about The Ruby Slipper? Any comments or other suggestions?

Ruby Slipper is one of my favorites for breakfast in New Orleans. I've had Daisy Dukes once and it was pretty good, but I'd favor Ruby Slipper.
