fins necessary for beach snorkel?

This will be my first time taking my own snorkeling equipment on a cruise. I will be doing some excursions snorkeling from a catamaran but was thinking of just trying a little beach snorkeling on my own where there is a beach right off the boat. My question- can I get way without taking my fins as they take up so much room in the luggage? I have snorkeled many times but never without fins. Thanks for your help

I don't believe the snorkeling police will care.

 

Fins help you to cover more ground and can be ESPECIALLY handy if there is current . . .

We never pack our fins for snorkeling and have never had a problem snorkeling from the beach. There are travel fins which are much shorter if you think they are necessary. Catamaran excursions will provide fins.

I finally got smart and bought "shorty" fins.

They are more than adequate for snorkelnig, and take up little luggage space.

Where are you going? While there are exceptions to every rule, most places that have good snorkeling from shore also have a bit of a swim to get there. :cool:

If I am doing an excursion, I don't carry fins. But if I am off on my own, usually a beach snorkel, I have my fins. Yes, they are a bit bulky but they pay off when wanting to move through the water.

Why anyone would consider snorkeling without fins is beyond me. 90% of your motions comes from your legs, and failing to use fins severely limits where you can go and how easily you can get there.

It's not so mysterious... some people just like to float on top and look down.
