Zqueen Posted September 15, 2015 #1 Share Posted September 15, 2015 We are going to Grand Cayman and Cozumel in October. We would like to see about renting a scooter in Cozumel to tour the island. What thoughts or advice do you have?
CruiserBruce Posted September 15, 2015 #2 Share Posted September 15, 2015 My suggestion would be to do some reading on the Cozumel board, located here: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/forumdisplay.php?f=
MrsPete Posted September 16, 2015 #3 Share Posted September 16, 2015 Safety check: You have experience riding a scooter? If so, great! It'll be an inexpensive, fun way for you to go where you want to go. Just pay attention to your time so you have plenty of time to return to the port. If not, I don't think a foreign country and a limited time frame make for ideal learning conditions.
leaveitallbehind Posted September 16, 2015 #4 Share Posted September 16, 2015 (edited) The undeveloped back side of Cozumel is beautiful and unspoiled. There is no electricity there so the few business run on generators for the day only as at dusk - with the exception of one very small boutique hotel - all the working staff return the "main" side where they live, and that side shuts down. There is a bus tour called the "Cozumel Bar Hop" (google it) that takes you to four of the day bars / restaurants on that side for a complimentary drink at each and time to spend enjoying the beach and pristine views with local food that is terrific. It is a blast and well worth it in that you experience a part of the island that most do not while leaving the driving to someone else. You can rent scooters and jeeps as well if desired and go on your own, but the tour is less expensive and well worth it. train460 Posted September 16, 2015 #5 Share Posted September 16, 2015 agree with the above. if you are not proficient with a scooter or motorcycle I would not chance it but you will see them all over. You can rent a convertible for about $30ish or a jeep for about double that from Isis Wife and I have our own motorcycles and I ride about 30K miles a year. I would not have an issue but then again we carried some gear, ie water, camera, snorkel etc so a vehicle made more sense to us. Chase101 Posted September 16, 2015 #6 Share Posted September 16, 2015 I second the Cozumel Bar Hop tour! My 2 daughters in their mid 20's & I did it 2 years ago with a group from our ship. It was fantastic, Everyone ( I think there were about 32 from our ship & 4 from a Carnival ship) had a great time! You get to see the other side of the island, which is beautiful! Rare Keith1010 Posted September 16, 2015 #7 Share Posted September 16, 2015 As CruiserBruce suggested I would ask about this on the ports of call boards. Keith
clackey Posted September 16, 2015 #8 Share Posted September 16, 2015 I have been shot at, cut,, rolled a Jeep and would love to crawl into an F16 but you don't have enough money to get me on a scooter in San Miguel. We have been to Cozumel a dozen times and the taxi drivers "WILL" run over you. If you are brave and decide to do this, please have your insurance paid, and writing a will would not be out of order. Having been to many Caribbean islands, I have to say it is unique, have never seen anything similar. We did it with the "Private Driver", and loved it. We hit a couple of the bars, had a fantastic meal, and finished up with an hour on a beach. As you mentioned, the bus bar hop gets raves also. Cozumel is one of my favorites, had a blast there.
