What items are "must takes" for a cruise just so you'll "always be prepared?"

Hey, how was the cruise?? Even without your sunglasses, you must have had a great time!!

We usually pack a little something for our room steward and waiters. Small things like an international phone card, bag of candy treats, or just some little thing that will put a smile on their faces (besides cash, since they also usually get a generous tip).

Hey Duck,

Just went to WalMart and what did I find? A roll of flat duct tape, labeled, I kid you not 'the original duck tape'! I had to buy it! Quack! Quack!

Going on CENTURY! Third X Cruise In Four Months!

I too saw the "DUCK" tape at Wal Mart

PeggySand.. Cruise was O.K. Just WAY TOO SHORT! You know you are on a short cruise when you get the tip envelopes the first night
It made us really look forward to our 10 night cruise in Feb. 2005.
I posted my member review for our short two night cruise on the Infinity.

Hello all,
We always take the freezer grade zip loc bags. Good for a variety of things from wet clothing/bathing suits to packing snacks. Individually wrapped Woolite packs. I got them from a hotel I frequent on business. When I asked one of the room service people where I could purchase them she handed me a bunch. Great for swimwear or specific undergarments. Ladies, the individually wrapped nail polish remover pads are wonderful & don't risk leakage on other packed items. DH won't leave home without at least a pocket PC. If you bring a laptop don't forget a locking cord. My mom's best friend made me a quilted velcro jewelery holder. It's got tons of compartments and folds up to fit in the safe. It always goes. We also have our well traveled Snuggle Bear. While still dating we collected all the proof of purchase bar codes from Snuggle Fabric Softner and sent them in with a few dollars. We received an original snuggle bear (circa 1986). Snuggle has gone on every trip with me since then; business & pleasure. We have photos of snuggle in a wide variety of places and with a variety of people. Needless to say, he has sentimental value and is always sticking out of a carry on or back pack!!

Its nice to have a nightlight if you have an inside cabin.

PeggySand,

I really like your idea of the little something extra for the stewards, etc. I especially like the phone card idea. The bag of candy idea wouldn't work because we'd eat the candy before we ever had the chance to give it to him.

I have a travel Owl that has been all over the world with my husband and I. He has his own special photo album showcasing all his travels. Next trip and there after we will also be traveling with "flat Stanley" for our daughter's first graders.

If you are used to coffee mugs, bring one. The coffee cups on board are tiny.
I also bring a huge old net diaper bag to hang in the closet and put our dirties in. We then put the whole bag in one suitcase to bring home. Guess how old my kids are? I used cloth diapers.

This is a must for us also. Some ship staterooms are warm and we can't do without the white noise.

This may seem silly, but we like to have white noise when we sleep, so we always bring along a travel fan (small) or sound machine...did anyone mention binoculars yet? Oh, and walkie talkies...especially if traveling with kids or a large group...they help out a LOT! Have fun!

45014,
Flat Stanley! My school's two kindergarten classes send out Flat Stanley's. Over the years we've had Flat Stanley's come back to the school with great journals and photos from all over the world. One Flat Stanley even went surfing in Hawaii, with photos to show him out in the ocean! The kids are delighted when their Flat Stanley returns after a month or two and they get to read (or hear) about his travels.

I love the ideas that are being posted to this thread. You all have some terrific suggestions! Thanks.

Just about any dollar store has great 3 foot by 2.5 foot mesh bags with draw string top for dirties to go in. Holds a week's worth, so we use 2 usually for Hawaii & cruises.

A power strip. As I take my alarm clock, laptop and digital camera, ONE outlet in the cabin certainly isn't enough. Also a large tumbler for iced tea. I'm sure these things are mentioned time and time again.

It's funny because I have been on more than 15 cruises and never thought to bring half of what everyone says to bring. I agree that zip loc bags are a must...great for preventing leaks in luggage; great to put lose coins; great to pack room service lunches for picky kids or for the beach; great for putting sandy or wet beach shoes...etc. At one point, I was packing way too much medicine; so I just bring a pain killer and cold medicine now. If you use a digital camera and have rechargable batteries, don't forget to bring the charger! We also bring a small thing of deoderizer for the bathroom and room to smell good at all times and we bring lysol wipes to wipe down phone in cabin, remote, etc....I know they clean but we do this in case someone was sick in the cabin with a cold before us.

Same with us but a surge protector 6 outlet strip, Sony magic stix changer, I do not bother with the laptop as we have plenty of stix, nighlight with fragrance oil in it, 20 oz drink containers w/ lids (does hot or cold) & my $15 Walmart steamer.

92 more days til Transatlantic. I AM READY!

Very important for those using digital cameras or camcorders. Bring an extra memory chip (stick or whatever your particular equipment uses). On our last cruise I brought my new digital minicam and I ran out of memory (the memory was only 8 mb)on the second day. With no PC to transfer the video to, my camcorder stayed in the safe the rest of the time. We ended up buying disposable cameras. I just purchased 2 memory sticks with 256 mb. That should be more than enough!! Enjoy your trip!!!
