Complimentary Upgrades

I've sailed Cadnival twice in a past life. I have several friends that <3 Carnival because they get free upgrades.

How does the free upgrade stateroom program on Carnival work?

What level of loyalty program do you have to be on Celebrity to always get upgrades?

How many of you actually get free upgrades every time you cruise?

Just confused by how Carnivals upgrade program works.

My mom and mother in law got an upgrade for free once. They were together in a connecting oceanview on deck 1 and got upgraded to an 8C balcony on the Valor. It was my mom's first cruise and MIL's 2nd. I'm guessing it was because someone needed their connecting room so they got lucky.

There is no rhyme or reason as to who gets them. I think the Carnival employees have a couple adult drinks, put the room numbers on a big roulette type wheel and give 'er a whirl.

I do so hope you meant just in the past and not "in a past life". But who knows...reincarnation might be the key to free cruises. ;)

Occasionally you see a post here by someone who got a real "no-cost" upgrade, but they are truly the exception.

Of course, you can hope for an upsell or call Carnival to upgrade your cabin (for a fee of course)

Never gotten a free upgrade on Carnival. The very few people that I know have were all high-rollers in the casino.

Once got a free upgrade on Celebrity. It was terrible, nearly ruined the cruise for us. Yes, I'm being serious. All upgrades are not good things.

Lesson learned: pick a cabin you are happy with and if an upgrade is offered check it out carefully and be ok saying "No" if it's not to your satisfaction.

Your friends are referring to what the cruise line calls upgrades with fare purchase meaning instead of deck one, they may be on deck two. They are not getting upgrades like from an interior to a balcony. The only "free upgrade" someone gets is if they book a guarantee and all of their booked category is completely sold out.

Many, many years ago, I was booked in an inside cabin. I logged in one day, and found that we were upgraded to a balcony. We didn't ask for it, we didn't get notified, it just happened. So, yes, it does happen. However, that was over 5 years ago. Oh, the good ol' days!

Not true. It does happen, but not often.- see my previous post. They were not booked in a guarantee and they didn't pay a penny for their upgrade. I know because I always handle all of my family's travel reservations. The TA was contacted by Carnival, and the TA in turn contacted me. Once I knew the cabin number they were being moved to and saw it was OK, I gave them the go ahead to switch rooms.

This!

We were on a 4th consecutive cruise not all on the same ship. We got to the port and when we went to check in they had moved us from an inside as far back as you can go on deck 1 or 2 (can't remember) to a balcony on deck 8. We wanted inside because this was our recovery cruise! lol, we wanted dark and quiet and planned on a lot of sleep.

We asked upon check in about the fact that we had checked our luggage with the tags from the other room. No problem we were told. We then got on the ship and went to GS and asked the same, No problem were were told. Our bags went to the wrong room.

Got to the new room and it wasn't ready, no one told the room steward.

EVERY night of the cruise our shower backed up with black slimy, stinky, water which smelled horrible and flooded our bathroom. EVERY night we had to wait for the plumber to come (up to 2 hours) and EVERY night we were told it was fixed.

We would have preferred to stick with our original cabin.

Carnival upgraded us in 2003 on the Legend because they wanted our cabin for 3 when we were only 2. They moved us to under the Lido deck and we did not sleep for 8 nights due to the bang, bang, bang while they cleaned starting every night at about 3. It was horrible. I did not step foot on a Carnival ship for 10 years because of their lack of concern over the situation. Celebrity upgraded us once to a concierge cabin on a 10 night Hawaiian cruise. It was heaven. Somewhere there must be a moral to is story. :)

It's very rare that Catnival gives free upgrades these days. They've taken to selling the upgrades, and only when they have no takers will they proceed with the freebie, as long as it benifits them.

I just received an email from Carnival, with an "upsell" offer to go up a few decks. Sorry, we're happy with the cabin we picked. We're doing a B2B with the same cabin for both so we'll stick to our original booking.

In October my cousin and I were sitting waiting to check in and board the Pride when my cell phone rang I answered it and the guy on the phone asked to speak with my cousin so I gave the phone to her. I heard her say what you want to upgrade us to a balcony, is this for real? I told her to ask for the cabin number I looked it up and told her to say yes!!! We were booked in an oceanview on the Riviera deck we were upgraded to a balcony on the Verandah deck!!!! This is the first time I was offered an upgrade for free!!!

Last year I was booked in an ocean view on deck 2 on the Glory. I was after final payment and the prices for a balcony had dropped to the price of my cabin. I called and very nicely inquired about a possible upgrade, and next thing I knew I was in a balcony cabin on deck & for no charge...
