We were on the 20 day Royal Princess celebrating a birthday in the Crown Grill on the last night and were surprised to see a couple seated by us dressed very casual in shorts. The manager said that they allow shorts on both the first and last nights.

That's pretty standard as folks may not have their luggage yet or have packed for disembarkation.

I hope smart casual is still allowed in Specialty Restaurants on Formal Nights because it provides a nice alternative for those who want to opt out of Formal Night but still want a quality dining experience.

We got off the Regal mid October and smart casual was fine on a formal night in the speciality restaurants. We didn't bring any formal gear and simply used these restaurants on formal nights and didn't feel out of place

We returned from a Canada New England cruise one week ago on the Carribean Princess. We were very surprised to find that, on formal nights, we had to dress formally in the speciality restaurants!!! We have always dressed "smart casual".....we don't want to pack formal clothes and love dinning at the spec. rest. Is this rule going to be on all the princess ships??? We were very disapointed.

No way.

Smart casual allowed in Speciality dining. Suit and tie never required. I've never been turned away wearing a golf/Hawaiian shirt, and khakis.

Plenty of unsubstantiated comments spreading FUD here.

So, what does the website say about dress code for restaurants?

It was absolutely required....the lady who took our reservation for the Crown Grill made it VERY CLEAR.......a new Princess policy.....on formal dress nights....formal dress required in spec. dinning venues!!! Anyone else hear this?

Find that hard to believe, enforce to your biggest spenders a more rigid dress code than the masses, that would be terrible for losing a few of the deeper pockets on the cruise.

My personal experience with the select dining was the best service, and a much more relaxed atmosphere. Well worth the money, but plain stupid if they start being more strict than the main dining room.
