Our family of 5 will be arriving the day before our cruise in May. Would it be better to stay near the airport, and then shuttle to the port the next day?

Yes, we used too stay in Galveston but hotels have more than doubled over last couple of years and the better hotels require a 2 night stay, you can get a nice hotel by airport then go to port in the morning, prices of hotels at both airports are cheap , we will stay at doubletree again by Hobby this April.

Yes Hobby area is viable option . If you want to crash.

But if you are on vacation. Galveston is wonderful place to visit along with the cruise!

We have traveled a lot and always try to visit the areas around ports. We love Galveston for all that it has.

Pricing varies in Galveston based on circumstances of events , just like New York , New Orleans, Barcelona , Rome , etc. But there are deals, if you do your homework. Plan around those events if you like.

You cannot make a flat statement about pricing and only two night stays!!

Enjoy cruising.

I think it would depend when your flight arrives. If it is the evening, may as well stay near the airport, if it is early in the day, maybe check out Galveston. Day of the week can also affect prices. Business hotels are usually higher during the week and lower on weekends, and resort type hotels are the opposite.

thanks everyone. . We won't have time to sightsee in Galveston. My hope is that we can get from airport to hotel, and then to the port the following day with ease.

You can do that.

Are you ship shuttle?

Our plan for our cruise in April is to stay at a hotel on the beach in Galveston. The hotel does free transfer to the port and they are on the beach, so start the vacation fun a day earlier.

Which hotel offers free transfer to the port?

La Quinta at Hobby has a package that includes round trip transportation to and from the Galveston port. The package says transportation for 4, so you'd have to find out if they will do 5, probably just a surcharge. We used it the past two years with no issues. They even waited for us on the return trip due to an unusually long disembarking process. The hotel is fine if you get in during the evening and just want to crash and get up and head to the ship. Not much to see/do around the hotel and I would advise getting dinner at the airport if you haven't eaten.
