Rare cruisemom42 Posted January 9, 2016 #2 Share Posted January 9, 2016 Strongly recommend taking the cable car to Erice, a beautiful hilltop medieval town. See here for info: http://www.italyheaven.co.uk/sicily/erice.html

N 2 Sun Posted January 12, 2016 #4 Share Posted January 12, 2016 Sicily has great ports at every corner of the island and some in between. Trapani is my second favorite because it gives you a modern town that still honors and maintains its history, culture, and gorgeous Baroque architecture. A walk from where the ship docks across the older section over to the beach area on the opposite side is a great way to see and experience the older section and the special people that live there. Be sure to ask locals about how they celebrate Good Friday....and for how many years they have been doing so. But before spending time in Trapani, I first would take a taxi for the short ride to the cable car base for the ride up to Erice. Erice is a village of many extremes - it offers stunning views of the beaches and mountains rising from the sea just north of Trapani - walking through Erice is almost like walking through time - many restaurants are very highly rated and some offer great views of the sea far below - as you continue your walk through the town, you will eventually reach the castle - from here you have many more dramatic views. Most people on the planet probably have no idea that a place like Erice even exists. Erice is a place in which you can be dazzled by lovely vistas, charming building, restaurants and people, and visualize what the ancient history of the castle and other buildings can teach us.
