What is a typical tip for both people?
There is no typical tip and you will get a myriad of different answers. I start with $10 a day per person for the Butler and $5 a day per person for the Concierge and then adjust up or down based on the service I receive.

That's the part I don't like, waiting in the line. Maybe we can call to request to take it into the account.

We went in the afternoon the day before disembarking. The line was not too long. They needed the name of our butler so make sure you have his/her name. We will do this from now on, it takes the worry our of carrying extra cash (or gives me more to lose at the casino)

I agree with this. We tend to use the concierge more than average so we bump that.

so, assuming 4 people, you tip $280/week to the butler and $140/week to the concierge?

Wow. Thats a lot of money for tips.

so, if you add in bar staff (assuming $1/drink, and say, 5 drinks/day), thats another $35 (no biggie)

and say you have 2 kids in the kids program, $10/kid/day, would be $140 for the kids club.

Plus tips for services in ports (cabs, guides, etc).

Plus tips for room steward, haven courtyard valet, etc...

Eesh. Id better start withdrawing $$ from the bank now, so I dont have to get $1000 in cash all at once before the cruise. Yikes.

Tip what YOU want to tip. Not guides from anyone else. Look at how much service you got from staff...or didn't get. It's not necessary to tip 10 bucks a day PP for the kids club nor to tip extra for drinks above the already mandatory gratuity if YOU don't feel it's warranted.

Again, it's the value and service given to YOU.

well, we use the kids club a lot and they arent included in the tip pool/service change/gratuity/thing either.

Everyone tips differently and you should tip an amount that you feel comfortable with, be it more or less.

My understanding is that the are contractors and are paid pretty well, at least from what I have read here. If that is incorrect someone please chime in. :D

Here is how I look at it. Just MHO. I have only cruised two in a cabin before. However three of us will be cruising on the Jade next year.

If the three of us are always doing the same exact thing I would bump the tips to probably $25 a day combined. Thats $10 for first 2 and $5 for 3rd pax.

Now if pax number 3 was making a lot of separate requests then I think that should be $10 too for $30 a day.

YMMV.

On the last 7 days cruise I had on Jewel, we did not order any in suite meal. We had all breakfast in the Haven courtyard, using the courtyard valet. I tip the valet double the amount as the butler. I hardly used any service from concierge, so I tip him the least.

I was told by a staff member in the spa that they arent ncl employees but employed with an outside agency and as such have different compensation i.e. more days off staff parties and they are able to eat in the specialty restaurants .

Thank you so much for a reply.

He is probably our favorite HD of all NCL .

We have had him 6 times and he is always professional, respectful and friendly to our CC group.

When we have had issues on board, he personally handled them in a quick and timely manner. And always above and beyond what we expected, including small gestures sent to cabin.

A real professional who has been in the hospitality business for many years.
