flipflops55 Posted January 19, 2016 #1 Share Posted January 19, 2016 Hi everyone, I'm looking for any info on how rough the boat ride will be on a cruise out of New York in late Jan early Feb going to Eastern Caribbean? I know weather will be cold leaving and none of us can predict the weather but by DH is worried about the boat rocking a lot. Any input would be helpful. Thanks. Rare Keith1010 Posted January 19, 2016 #2 Share Posted January 19, 2016 Unfortunately the answer is we just don't know. Seas could be calm, moderately rough or even rough and history means nothing. Best to come prepared with nausea medication and to book a room mid ship and possibly on a lower deck. Keith
robtulipe Posted January 19, 2016 #3 Share Posted January 19, 2016 We have sailed four times out of NYC in the winter and haven't had a really bad ride yet but like the weather you can't predict what the seas will be like far out. We just returned from an Anthem of the Seas cruise out of Bayonne, NJ and the ship's movement wasn't bad at all. We had 6 to 8 foot swells sailing the two sea-days south to the East Caribbean and similar seas on the three sea-days return north. The stabilizers on a modern cruise ship does a decent job of minimizing motion. If DH is that concerned about the ship's motion select a cabin on a very large ship, like Anthem, just aft of mid-ship point close to the waterline as these will have the least motion in any given sea conditions. Avoid the very forward, higher deck cabins as these will have the most motion for most sea conditions. We had a deck 10 balcony close to the stern on Anthem and there wasn't a lot of motion in our cabin throughout our 12 night cruise.
marco Posted January 19, 2016 #4 Share Posted January 19, 2016 We've sailed may times out of NY/NJ in the winter months. There's just no way to say it will be smooth or rough. Yes, it will be cooler than if you were sailing in the summer, but as for the seas, some years it's been smooth as glass in the winter, some years rough, some years in the summer months it's been rougher than in the winter. Temperature you can kind of predict, although several years it was mild enough to be in the pool the afternoon prior to docking in NYC.
Krazy Kruizers Posted January 19, 2016 #5 Share Posted January 19, 2016 Weather is hard to predict. Those cruising out of New York this week are going to have a rough cruise. A Nor'easter is on tap.
