mickeysgal Posted January 25, 2016 #1 Share Posted January 25, 2016 We are in Amsterdam post cruise. For those that have been to Amsterdam, how many days are enough (I know, there never is enough time) to see the highlights. Post cruise, we're usually tired and sort of ready to go home so don't want to overdo on the city time to the point we're not into it anymore. Hope that makes sense. Anyone mix it up with a half day or day trip to a surrounding area? Thank you all.
diane.in.ny Posted January 25, 2016 #2 Share Posted January 25, 2016 (edited) I would suggest minimum two full days ... one day to walk the city and one day to see a couple of museums. This link is to a post on my blog which contains a map for a walking tour around the city plus a couple of other hints. You can click on the maps and then print the images if you want to take them along with you http://www.travelsnippetsandmore.com/2010/04/tips-for-amsterdam-holland.html Unfortunately the original site where I got the map, and had details on the numbered stops, is now broken (I just checked) ... but you should be able to lay this over a good map of Amsterdam and work from there. I agree with that. Unless you are here end of April/beginning of May, then you need one more day to go to Keukenhof, flower garden to see the tulips. By the way this is a nice printable map (for the sections you like to see) for Amsterdam: http://www.amsterdam.info/print/map/
nojoke Posted January 25, 2016 #4 Share Posted January 25, 2016 Last year we spent 4 nights in Amsterdam. We stayed at Park Hotel near museums. The first day we visited Keukenhof, the next day we visited (on a tour) ZaanSchanz, Marken, Volendam. etc. The next day we saw Rijksmuseum and took an evening canal boat tour. The following day we walked all over town. Any less time would mean leaving out something. Amsterdam was very pretty and friendly. Plenty to see for whatever time you can spare. We did 4 nights pre cruise last year and that was perfect, also gave us a chance to get over jet lag before port intensive cruise. We are doing the same this year but plan on 2 days out of the city, train service is excellent. Make sure to make Anne Frank reservations before you go preferably early morning, if you don't make reservation the lines are horrendous.

I did Holland/Belgium/Luxembourg on a 21 day land trip not a cruise. But we had 5 days in Amsterdam as a home base. We traveled to Middleburg on the train to see The Delta Works, a trip to Keukenhof and Delft, a trip to Alkmaar to see the cheese merchants, and a trip to Zanse Schanz (sp?) Marken and Volendam visiting a cheese farm. In Amsterdam itself we did a canal boat tour, visited Dam square, saw the floating flower market, walked the Red Light District, visited Anne Frank House but missed the major museums as they were closed when we left on our daily trips, and again closed by the time we returned in the evening. Only you can decide how much you want to try and see and how much time would be involved. Some folks spend hours in a museum, but as I said, we missed that completely as we wanted to see more of the countryside. Have a great trip, Holland was amazing. Rare brazilgirl Posted January 28, 2016 #8 Share Posted January 28, 2016 We spent three full days post cruise on one trip ( and had been there doing a previous cruise stop on a different trip) and will be spending 3 days on an upcoming trip in July. I still feel we have barely scratched the surface. An amazing city with so much to do. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk

However, Amsterdam is a charming city & definitely worth as much time as your constitution permits. If you only wish to see the city, 2 days is ample (as previously mentioned, purchase AFH tickets online as well as Van Gogh & Rijksmuseum tickets). I love the evening canal tours when all the bridges are lighted (the wine & cheese tour - lovely & relaxing). I would suggest 3 days if you wish to see the tulips at Keukenhof (early May) or Zaanse Schans. (I really loved Zaanse Schans - only about an hour from AMS - we took the x bus from Centraal Station & it was simple and economical. dogs4fun Posted January 28, 2016 #13 Share Posted January 28, 2016 I used Holland International Canal Cruises - - lovely 2 hour cruise, starts at 8pm (there are also other companies that offer similar canal cruises): https://www.canal.nl/en/candlelight-cruise
nojoke Posted January 28, 2016 #14 Share Posted January 28, 2016 No joke, what tour company did you use? Viator. We also used them to tour Keukenhof. Good prices, but a bit rushed, but that is normal when you want to at least "see" everything
