mammajamma2013 Posted January 29, 2016 #26 Share Posted January 29, 2016 I believe it has already been found in Southern Florida. Yahoo news headlines state it's nine states. Didn't read the article so don't know which states.
cherylandtk Posted January 29, 2016 #27 Share Posted January 29, 2016 (edited) It is in eleven states, plus Washington DC and two additional states may have cases. No local transmission as of yet, other than in Puerto Rico and US Virgin Islands. That is expected to change as mosquito activity increases in the spring. I expect this list to be outdated by tomorrow..... Arkansas – 1 case originating from Central America California – 6 cases (2 from 2015 and the rest from 2013 and 2014) Florida – 3 cases originating from Colombia and Venezuela Hawaii – 1 case of a woman who gave birth to a child with microcephaly and had lived in Brazil Illinois – 2 cases originating from Honduras and Haiti (both women were pregnant) Minnesota – 1 case originating from Honduras Montana – Not confirmed, but one case may have been discovered in northwest Montana, but labs haven’t confirmed it yet New Jersey – 1 case originating in Colombia New York – At least 7 cases Oregon – 3 cases originating from Polynesia Texas – 2 cases originating from El Salvador and Colombia Virginia – 1 case from Central America Wisconsin - suspected, waiting for test results. cherylandtk Posted January 29, 2016 #28 Share Posted January 29, 2016 (edited) Thanks. I know it spreads by mosquitos but my confusion was if it is only one type mosquito that can carry Zika and infect those they bite or if any mosquito that bites an infected person can later bite someone else and infect them. There is one type of mosquito for certain that carries the virus. That type exists in the US, primarily in the southeastern states, but also in California, Arizona and and Washington DC. There are other common mosquitos in all states. They are not yet listed as a major carrier, but some cases of Zika in the UK have been listed as being locally transmitted by culex mosquito. So the answer is we don't know if any sort of mosquito can carry the virus, but we do know that some do. SPacificbound Posted January 29, 2016 #29 Share Posted January 29, 2016 Obviously everyone has to look at the risk and make their own decision. If I were of childbearing age I would not take this risk.
MaidMirawyn Posted January 29, 2016 #30 Share Posted January 29, 2016 There are so many other places to cruise and many more land vacations. Hope you have thought your priorities through. Personally I would not put off starting my family for a few hours in each of these countries Well, we had already considered taking a break for other reasons. Just another factor. You're right about the list probably needing constant updating as a case has been identified in Boston. There is one type of mosquito for certain that carries the virus. I greatly appreciate the time and effort you go to helping us get a grip on what is real about this virus. Many thanks. :)

Today it was announced that here is PA, a couple of women who just came home from cruises are now being tested for Zika. One of them is pregnant.
