Why I wasn't impressed by Momte Carlo

I'll start...it is pretty, but of all the possible places to visit on the French Riviera it was my least favorite..no markets and little charms. Unless you have kids (it does have a redeeming value with its oceanographic museum) I'd give it a miss unless you have seen the other towns. But, wonder if others feel the same way?

Flame away! But, the desire to get to Monte Carlo is escaping me.

We have another discussion going on about this same item.

In the end, the only opinion that matters is our very own. There are certainly places that I don't care for that you might like and ones you don't like such as this one that I like.

But you will never know until you see it for yourself. So best that people make up their own minds.

Same for most other things. (movies, restaurants, theatre, tours, politicians, sports, and the list goes on and on and on)

For me I like to discover so I will visit as many places as we can.

Over the years I learned that some places that I thought I would love were not as good as I expected and some places that I thought might be so so turned out to be gems for me and my wife.

How strange - my husband felt exactly the same. He said it was an adults Disneyland and everything was just too perfect. It is very pretty as you say but it doesn't have much character, the inland hillside villages being much more interesting and with much more character.

Thanks Keith, I missed it. It was probably all the MC threads that has gotten the anti MC'ers speaking up.

We actually port there on our next cruise. I am only looking forward to an al fresco dinner in the aft dining, since the ship is in port late. But, for the port day...we'll go elsewhere.

To each his own, I guess. We loved Monte Carlo. It rained so hard that the curbs were running like little creeks, we were soaked right down to the passports in our purses, and our tour guide left us in town. Despite that, my cousin and I still call it one of our favorite ports. We've always been Princess Grace fans, and we dreamed of visiting there for years. The town is very walkable, everyone is friendly, and it's very safe.

I wonder why you have to compare. Cote Azur is awesome with incredible places. Montecarlo is just another spot whose main interest lies on being one of the smallest country we have in Europe. Old town is absolutely divine.

I have a simple view. The world is beautiful. Take advantage of opportunities to travel to see as much as you can through your own eyes and remember we all see things from different perspectives. Thank goodness because if we all saw things the same way it would be boring.

I guess the comparison is because the trevelers in this case are cruisers...many whom are taking their one and only shot at the area. When I originally posted this thread it was at a time when the top five threads were Monte Carlo centric.

From Villefrance it can make sense (although I would go to Nice, I can understand some heading Monte Carlo). But, from Cannes, on a one day short stop it really loses it's allure.

This is not to say we didn't have a nice time sipping some drinks and people watching outside the cafe that overlooks the entrance of the casino....but, as a whole, the town just didn't match the hype for us.
