Gibraltar to Moracco

Recommended Posts

About 10 years ago we took a fast ferry to a port in Morocco. Walked across the border into Spain. Has anyone done this lately? We will be spending three

visits to this port, and want to do something else. Also any suggestion, we have been to Gibraltar eight times and have done the usual tourist things.

Suggestions welcomed.

I assume that you have had a traditional English Afternoon Tea at the Rock Hotel?

Ferry timetables mean this can't be done in the timescale of the usual port-of-call visit to Gib. :(

From Algeciras you can only take the traditional car ferry to a new port, Tangier Port-Med, which is in the middle of nowhere about 50 minutes from Tangier. A bus to Tangier is included in the ferry fare - but you'd need to leave Tangier before you arrived :(

The fast-ferry goes to the harbour in Tangier itself, but sails from Tarifa, a 45 minute taxi ride from the Gib border. Again, the limited ferry frequency screws up a day-trip for those on a port-of-call visit to Gib.

And even if timetables had worked out, the fast-ferries don't run reliably to time.

If you want to try something different, frequent Gib buses (about 2 euros) to the border, walk across the border, a pre-booked rental car from the Spanish side of the border at La Linea, & drive to Tarifa to explore the old walled Moorish town. Some super elevated views of the Straits at a little roadside bar on the way to Tarifa. And mebbe drive up the Atlantic coast (Costa de la Luz) a little way - it's a windsurfers' paradise.

Or drive up into the hills around Jimena de la frontera & Gaucin - various options for a circular route of 2 to 3 hours.

Thanks John Bull for the advise. We will walk for the ship to the Spanish crossing, always a hoot. We have reserved a car for the day, as we are in the

port for 12 hours. We will be doing this port twice this cruise. Thanks everyone for the suggestions.

12 hours in port ? :)

Double-check those terry times, it might be possible. Independently or by joining a tour.

There are bus+ferry excursions to Tangier from resorts along the Spanish coast. Those excursions, which also include a coach, lunch & walking tour in Tangier, are about the same price as a ferry ticket - though tying in with a suitable pick-up time & place might be problematic, easier & simpler to drive to the port at Tarifa & meet the coach group there. (the tours cross as foot-passengers & are met by another coach in Tangier).

Here are a couple of typical offerings

http://juliatravel.com/tours/costa-del-sol/small-group-full-day-tour-to-tangier-from-costa-del-sol-9159_201/

but there are plenty of others.

None quote ferry times out or back, - you need to find out those times & they may be the stumbling block for tying in with a tour.

The guide in Tangier is useful, but the lunch & coach tour are no big deal - your ferry berths close to the souk & old-town & DIY isn't difficult.

Beware time differences, Morocco is sometimes one hour sometimes two tours behind - which explains how you arrive before you left ;)

Also check the latest time you can return the car.
