I was so happy to sign in tonight and find your report! We leave Sunday on Conquest for a 6 day. I 'd prefer 8 but this one will go to my happy place, Half Moon Cay,(hopefully we didn't make it in Jan.) Do you think you will be finished by Saturday? :)

Sorry about your battery. We live in central FL so a bit more of a drive and had a flat tire in Jan. 15 when heading south. We were so blessed that it did not happen on the lonely road getting to the turnpike and there just happened to be a AAA tow truck sitting there. (Spare was flat) We made it to the port with 1/2 hour to spare. That was nerve wracking! Now we have a new car so hopefully this time will be smooth sailing!

I loved the picture of the huge RCCL ship compared to Celebrity. We go on a big boy in June. Not sure how we are going to like it. I hope the people that say it doesn't feel any more crowded that another ship because it is so big know what they are talking about!

You are a handsome guy. You sort of look like 2 different guys I used to know a long time ago! I can't wait to hear the rest of your review.

Following along and thank you for posting!

While I enjoy pictures, I like a good narrative even more :)

Our upcoming cruise was between the Conquest with a similar itinerary and the Magic with a cove balcony. The Magic won out this time, but now I'm almost regretting it! I wish all the CDs would do neat lectures like that..I would LOVE to be at some of those!

Looking forward to the next installment.

Following along, as my husband and I will be on the Conquest for the first time in August. :)

Great review so far!

Thanks for reading, I hope you enjoy. We really liked the ship.

Thanks for the compliments. I dont think I'll be done by Saturday. Work gets in the way, I can only post a bit at a time and we haven't gotten to the first port yet.

We try not to be too far from the port, to avoid battery and tire problems, let alone traffic accidents. I would have been very stressed if I made the ship with 30 minutes to "spare". ;)

Enjoy your cruise, I love HMC.

Thanks for reading; I really appreciate the comment. I try to have people feel they are on the ship with us; it's fun re-living it.

I'm sure you'll love the Magic. We've been going out of Port Canaveral a lot recently since its the most centrally located for us. Something steered us to the Conquest this time; I'm glad it did.

This morning, I headed up the jogging track around 6:40 to get a walk in. I was the only one there; so I unofficially proclaimed it the “Cruzin’Scotty Jogging Track” for the day!

Today’s breakfast option was an omelette (ham, cheese, mushrooms and onion), along with some banana bread. I really enjoyed visiting with family when they came and went as the morning went by.

How about if we look at the ship a little more closely? I mentioned I had heard some negative comments about the artistic theme of the ship. Let’s see what YOU think.

Here is the ceiling of the Artist's Lobby; a beautiful collage of art:

DSC_1730_zpsvjsjjypi.jpg

Here is another view. Note, you can see more easily see the smaller works of art in individual sections. It seems everywhere you looked up, you saw art:

DSC_1731_zpsrdlsn8cm.jpg

Next is a favorite of mine. As you go up the glass elevators, there is more to see:

DSC_1741_zps6ciltgsc.jpg

And up on Deck 9, as you head from the elevators towards the pool, the Top Hat is another favorite:

Here’s a picture from Alfred’s Lounge:

DSC_1749_zpsdoobsgzl.jpg

OK, so having artwork in the adult Lido pool area may seem a bit much. But, this one actually fits in quite naturally:

DSC_1771_zpszx8ckiqc.jpg

I will say my family really LOVED the décor; we found it to be one of our favorite ships.

Coming Soon: Let’s talk about WWII, and every time you turn around, there's food!

Enjoying your review. We were with you on the Sunshine in Sept. We are on the the Conquest in Sept of this year. Ours is the Southern route, so I'm paying close attention to anything about the ship. Would really enjoy having Josh as CD but not sure if he'll still be on. Thanks again.

I'm glad you are enjoying the review. I'm glad we went on the Sunshine, and wouldn't rule it out; but we're not actively seeking that ship out again.

I'd love to do the Southern route some day. I really, really liked this itinerary. I believe it's fairly new; I'm ready to do it again.

Josh said he is scheduled to be on the Conquest for quite a while, except for vacations. It depends on how early in September your cruise is. His wife is expecting their first child, either the end of September or the beginning of October.

This morning, Josh’s lecture is: D-Day, The Invasion of Normandy. This was very interesting. I didn’t learn quite as much today since I do like history; but I did learn what the D in D-Day stands for.

Do you know what it is?

It’s quite silly, actually. It stands for “Day”. When planning attacks, the actual day is a Big Day, but "Day" by itself is too plain. So the attack day is D-Day, with the day before being D+1 Day, etc.

So, it really means “Day-Day”. :)

There were many D-Days during WWII, and during all wars; this is just the most famous one.

Towards the end of the lecture, Josh showed a graph of WWII vets since the end of the war. The number is decreasing rapidly. He said there are only around 400,000 WWII vets still alive. I raised my hand, and pointed to my Pop sitting next to me and yelled out, “Here’s one of them”. Josh stopped and asked to make sure he had heard right. He said he’d love to talk to Pop after the lecture, but alas; he had somewhere else to get to. Maybe later.

A few in our group wanted to stay in the Lounge and listen to the Shopping Talk. The good thing I will say is that Peter was funny. Otherwise, it was very, VERY long. I finally left because I was hungry.

What’s that? Yes – on day 3 – I was actually hungry!

And, as far as the shopping tips go: it turns out that every single deal that was mentioned and every coupon that you had to find from Peter later was available at each shop on its own…..

Lesson learned; that is a “once and done" for us.

Today, I headed to the Blue Iguana for lunch. The pork tacos are great; the meat has just a little kick to it! Today’s dessert choices included the under-cooked chocolate pops, and the same banana cream pie which is also served at the Sea Day Brunch. YUM!

Time for more relaxing on the balcony; I’m really enjoying the slower pace of this cruise.

Time for more food; it’s everywhere. :D

Next, we headed to Tea Time, but not just Tea Time; Tea Time for Veteran’s. In year’s past, there were separate Veteran’s Meets in private rooms. This gave people a chance to talk in a more intimate setting. The last few cruises, they moved the Veteran’s Meet to Tea Time; it’s not a good move. Though it was set up better than the Sunshine last year. At least they had a table placard for Veteran’s and we were placed at a large table. We had a total of 5 veterans at the table. Still, it’s noisy and hard to talk. It wasn’t until most people left that we had a chance to move around and have a good conversation.

Speaking of Tea Time; I knew they had taken the Specialty Tea Bags away from the Lido Deck. Too much pilferage; I get it. But, I did not expect those teas to be gone from Tea Time. After all, it is TEA time. They bring the tea bags around, they could easily limit each person to two tea bags and still offer the previous selection. It may not seem like a big thing; but the little cut backs start to add up after a while. The dessert choices thankfully are still great. I chose the apple tart and a chocolate macaroon.

Can you tell yet that I have a sweet tooth? ;)

Afterwards, I need to get a walk in, but want to stay out of the sun. I found down on Deck 3, outside the Artist’s Lobby, worked well. It was in the shade, there was a nice breeze, and very few people had found this nice quiet hang out.

Coming soon: Our evening at sea

Tonight we had planned to meet at The Alchemy Bar to take a drink with us to dinner. When I arrived, Josh was there; talking with the family. My brother saw him walk by and pulled him over since he said he wanted to speak with Pop a bit about the war. I mentioned to Josh that Carnival’s moving the Veteran’s Meet to Tea Time was not working. He said that was just extra now. He said they have something extra special planned for Veteran’s a little later in the cruise. :)

The Remedy is always a favorite with us at The Alchemy, with someone also ordering Forty is the new Twenty.

When we arrived at dinner, there was a slight wait to get in; but not bad. Surprisingly, our table was already taken. We found out later that our head waiter needed to get off early that night, so they filled all of his tables first. The crew tonight was not as lively as our first few nights. But, we saw Rondel; he’s the waiter from the Sea Day Brunch. We didn’t know he was in this dining room. We took note of a table number in his section that would seat all of us for a future night.

The service the first two nights was pretty fast; tonight it was very slow. I did watch; it wasn’t our new crew. All of the tables were slow. We really like YTD, but they do need to work on speeding things up a bit.

Here is the Blogger’s menu again. While we are on night 3 of OUR cruise; you need to skip to night 4 to see our options tonight.

http://www.zydecocruiser.net/CarnivalFreedomBC9/menu/mdr_menu.html

I tried something tonight I learned on CC. I ordered the Prosciutto as an appetizer and teamed it with the dessert cheese plate. What a great appetizer that turned out to be!

Something else I really like about the new menu is they have moved the BBQ ribs from the first formal night to tonight. Popular at dessert was the Sticky Toffee Brioche and the S’mores Parfait. I know it varies by ship; but neither of these seemed as good as when we had them on the Liberty.

Afterwards, we headed to the Theater for the Playlist Production: The Brit’s. We enjoyed this show, it had great graphics. The quality of singers compared to the Playist shows on the Sunshine last year was much better. Though I will admit I found one thing odd. The story revolves around “Georgy” – from Georgy’s Girl and “Bennie” from Bennie and the Jets. I’m almost positive I don’t remember them singing Georgy Girl and 100% sure they didn’t sing Bennie and the Jets. It would have tied it all together just a bit more, IMHO.

We enjoyed the 80’s trivia so much, we headed to the Artist Lobby to watch/listen to the 50 and 60’s Trivia/Karaoke.

Josh was really funny tonight. A teenager walked thru the Lobby pretending to be talking to his shoe like it was a phone. Then, he got on the glass elevators. Josh took his shoe off and imitated him; telling him to “call me”. :D

He also had a conga line form while Tequila played.

At one point, when he revealed the song, “Big Girls Don’t Cry”, he said it was by The Four Tops. We thought he was joking, until someone corrected him. He admitted he was wrong, and said, yes its’ The Four Seasons. Then he said the name, Franki Valli.

You can tell he had a great crowd that was having fun. He went off-script and sang acapella the first line, “You’re just too good to be true”. He had us in the palm of his hand. The entire crowd, from Decks 3 thru 5 and on higher decks as well, joined in on the 2nd line as we all sang the entire first verse of “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You” – acapella. So much fun; a definite “had to be there” moment.

Next, I went to the Promenade to listen to music. It’s funny how people have different thoughts. But, I am VERY glad 3000 people don’t all like the same things on a ship – otherwise every single line would be very, very long.

I saw a recent comment posted about the musicians on the Conquest near the casino being drowned out by other noises. I found the exact opposite. Between the smoke from the casino and the usually VERY loud band that is playing; it’s an area I try to get past as quick as possible. But, I really enjoyed the softer sounds of the accordion player, and Dustin, the solo guitarist. I could actually sit and listen for a bit.

While we’re talking about music, there were a few other groups I heard. There was Six Appeal, a six piece singing group; and The Hornets, a 3 piece horn group. Sometimes they played separately and sometimes together they played as a 9 piece band with a horn section. It was a very nice variety. I saw mention of a Caribbean band, but I don’t recall hearing them.

The music volume was also interesting. In the Lobby, I have found the music too loud for many years. The first half of this cruise; it was perfect. You could enjoy the music and still have a conversation. Then, on the last half; it was back to being too loud. What’s up with that? LOL

So, I finally headed back to the cabin to find an elephant on the bed. And he had a present for us! Tucked in his trunk was a “Random Acts of Fun-ness” gift card worth $50 in the spa. I’ve never seen or heard of these. What a nice way to end the evening.

Coming soon: St. Maarten

Land Ho! When we got up, DW and I could see land. Gosh, the mountains look higher than I remember in St. Maarten. And, also, we’re toward the aft of the ship; we shouldn’t see an island to the starbard side. We should see land in front of the ship, but we’re too far back for that. The map on TV showed us it was the island of Saba. Never heard of it. Is it inhabited? Anyone know?

You may have noticed I’ve used St. Maarten, instead of St. Martin. That’s because it’s the Dutch spelling; we’re not heading to the French side of the island this trip.

I continued my daily routine of stopping by to say good morning to my “early riser” brother who has picked our table for the morning. Then I went up to walk on the jogging track before grabbing breakfast and visiting as others made their way to the Lido.

It’s back to the Blue Iguana again. This morning, I’ll mention something I learned on CC: the Watermelon n’ Jimaca salsa. I’m not a huge watermelon fan, so believe me when I say this stuff is – GREAT! And it’s listed as a healthy option as well. :)

On my way to the table, I noticed DW speaking with a woman in a wheelchair. DW’s intuition caused her to ask if she was the medical emergency from our first night. Sadly, she was. Poor thing, it was her first cruise. She fell on her high heels on the slick floor in the Renoir Dining Room and broke her leg in 3 places. She even pulled out her phone and showed us the X-rays. She was stable, but being air-lifted from St. Maarten back to Ft. Lauderdale. She was thankful she bought the insurance to cover it.

This morning’s breakfast discussion revolved around our “Random Acts of Fun-ness” cards and the fact they are not quite so random.

And not as appealing as I think Carnival means them to be. We did not read the fine print on the card last night. It turns out that all 4 of our cabins got them, and all were in the name of the first person on the cabin booking. For us, that was 3 men and one woman. The cards are NOT transferrable; meaning you can’t give them to someone else in the SAME cabin. So Carnival; if you’re trying to increase your Spa revenue, this doesn’t do it. The girls would have been more than happy to go have facials or some other treatment and spend a few extra bucks doing it. But, us guys – not so much. Nice try, keep working on it.

By now, we have arrived in St. Maarten. In true chillin’ style; we’re not in a hurry to get off with the masses at any port this trip. We strolled off the ship at 9:30. We took the tram which was a nice touch; it saved some valuable steps for Pop and other family members. Some of the gang headed to the water taxi to shop downtown. We stayed at the dock area and shopped. After the Travel Talk, it was fun to look at the diamond shops. DW was eyeing the Blue Topaz, and we had not seen Mexican Fire Opals before. Being Clemson fans, these bright orange gems were quite beautiful. But we, meaning DW, resisted temptation. WHEW! ;)

Let’s take a look at the beautiful bay right at the dock in St. Maarten:

Coming soon: Sometimes, you can find a piece of paradise right in the port area, when you least expect it

So, how many of you have tried the Guava jelly and Coconut smoothie samples they have very close to the ship? Boy, are they good. On the way back to the ship, we decided to stop and have the coconut.

Here is Coco Express:

DSC_1870_zpsk2v7shhe.jpg

It’s very small; but it’s in the shade and away from the noise. See how close it is to the ships?

DSC_1873_zpsytybcbix.jpg

Oh, the calories; but it was so worth it:

DSC_1873c_zpszlptzob5.jpg

There are only a few seats; but around the corner, where you wouldn’t expect it, was a bird feeder:

DSC_1880_zpspnwzduy3.jpg

It was sooooo nice and relaxing in the shade with a breeze.

Chillin’ at its best. :D

Coming soon: What is a Mein Schiff and why are there 3 of them?

Being the Type A personality I am; I had checked a website to see which ships would be in each port with us. So, imagine my surprise this morning when there was not one, but two mega-liners already docked. Anyone heard of the German cruise line TUI? Here is the Mein Schiff 3, along with the Grandour of the Seas (out of Baltimore) and the Conquest:

DSC_1847_zpsoq3q0nuz.jpg

Also in port with us was a Silver Sea ship, the Silver Spirit and two mega yachts. I heard a rumor back on board and confirmed it when I got home thru the ever trusty internet ;) - one of the yachts, the Seven Seas, is owned by Steven Spielberg. Was he there? Who knows, but its’ fun thinking he was sitting there looking at all of us with no idea he was there.

We got back on board, but what to have for lunch? Pizza is the choice today. There was no line and I wanted to order a specialty pizza: 4 cheese, pepperoni and mushroom. With special orders, you must take the entire pizza. Thankfully, I had a little help from DW finishing it off. And for dessert, today is my favorite lunchtime option: pineapple upside down cake.

I actually took a nap this afternoon. My one and only of the cruise; boy it sure felt good.

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Coming up: the rest of our day on the ship

Today is the first day we’ve had a good amount of shade on our double balcony at a time we wanted to use it. First, we relaxed and visited with my brother/SIL we shared the balcony with. I love this “dueling photos” shot:

DSC_1921_zpseengjab7.jpg

Later, Pop and his better half came by to watch our Sail Away from St. Maarten.

Tonight, we split up with some of us opting for the buffet instead of the Main Dining Room, as we sometimes do.

If you’re keeping track, and want to see, it is our Fourth night. But you need to look at Day Three of the Blogger’s Menu:

http://www.zydecocruiser.net/CarnivalFreedomBC9/menu/mdr_menu.html

I was in the group that opted for the buffet this evening. The options obviously are not as plentiful as the MDR. But, they did present a nice salad, tilapia, veal parmigiana, with lamb on the carving station. They had Spring rolls which were on the MDR menu as well. Dessert is what is most lacking at the dinner buffet. They had a good cherry vanilla cake though. And, there’s always the 24hr soft serve ice cream and yogurt. :D

We’re an hour late, but we headed to the Lido Deck for the Dive-In movie - Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Everyone had the same idea; it is by FAR the most crowded I have seen any Dive-In movie. Initially, we were in the very last row of lounge chairs. Our TV at home looked bigger. LOL

Later, we found a spot on Deck 10 with a side view. Watching Star Wars, under the stars, with the lights of St. Maarten behind us……..ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

I hate to bore you with all this relaxing; ;) but it’s time for a little balcony time before heading to bed.

Coming soon: St. Kitts

Our last cruise was a lot about relaxing, and on our upcoming cruise I think we might even be more invested in it. We'll have a cove balcony and plan to make good use of it, and in two of the ports I am thinking we'll be giving ourselves an extra mostly sea day with a bit of a land view.

I saw another review recently with the spa card given to them. I booked a massage on my first cruise and was so irritated with the hard sell afterward, combined with the outrageous prices, I highly doubt I'll ever do it again. Maybe that's starting to catch up with them?

Agree with you on the pork tacos at Blue Iguana. In fact, ANY of the tacos there, including the fish, were really good on the Liberty as well and I had them more than once. Wish I'd tried the watermelon salsa now. I went for the habanero instead. Yowza!

Saba is indeed inhabited. It's part of the Dutch Antilles and has resorts/touristy things to visit.

I'm really loving your review! You're doing a fabulous job of making me feel like I'm there! Sigh..if only. Carry on soon!

Thanks so much for your comments. I can tell people are reading, but not much feedback recently.

If the cruise industry hasn't hit Saba yet; I bet its still a lot more natural.

I've heard the Spa people usually do a hard sell anyways. I'm sure it's an outsourced company, but you would think they'd learn how much is too much.

I really love ships with the Blue Iguana. I went so much, I'm trying to mention something different every time so it's not the same "rinse and repeat" story. :)

We really did enjoy just getting off at each port for a few hours. The ship is our destination.

Now, time to continue on.

As I said before, we didn’t do any excursions this trip; even though this is a new port to us. I was up early today @ 6am, and we were very close to the island.

I walked while we were docking, here is an early, overcast, picture:

DSC_1980_zpsvbky9ojb.jpg

Today’s breakfast was a little lighter; a banana, a poppyseed muffin and a sticky bun. Oh – sticky buns – where have you been? How did I just find you today? LOL

This morning, during our breakfast conversation, Pop has "Show and Tell"!?!?

He mentioned something extra was waiting for him in his room last night. He had brought his “ship on a stick” that was from John Heald and Josh! He also had champagne and chocolate covered strawberries. So THIS was the surprise from John; it was greatly appreciated.

After breakfast, the skies have cleared up. Here’s a pic of the marina:

DSC_1985_zpsybfdz8bf.jpg

The overcast and clearing skies repeated itself several times with a few showers here and there. I heard later that the morning water excursions had been cancelled.

Here’s a view of the shopping area from the dock:

DSC_1987_zpsvwnesnlg.jpg

I must say I was surprised this area is much larger than I expected. We went ashore @ 9:30. The overcast skies were back, it sprinkled as we reached the dock. The Navigator of the Seas arrived; which we last saw in Port Everglades.

This is a new port for me, so I did find a shot glass for my collection. I didn’t get into enough shops to find a t-shirt I liked. The ones I saw said St. Kitts and Nevis and I didn’t go to Nevis. Not that I really saw much of St. Kitts. LOL

Here’s one of the side streets we hit:

DSC_2002_zpsoqka0r2z.jpg

BATHROOM SIGNAGE ALERT AHEAD -

While shopping, we ran into some family members. I stayed with them while others headed to a nearby bathroom. When they didn’t come back for 20 minutes, I was worried they had fallen in. ;)

There are bathrooms as you enter the port from the dock; and more at the other end of the shopping area; but these are NOT marked properly. The signs lead you down a side street. Then, when you can’t find them, someone directs you to one that you have to pay $1 to use. When I went looking, I got the $1 bathroom story and said there were supposed to be free ones. He then pointed me back onto the main street.

So…..Don’t be fooled by the bathroom signs leading you off the main drag.

Soon, we all found each other and though we missed a lot of shops, headed back on board for lunch.

Coming soon: the rest of our day back on ship
