Navigator Voom update.

Recommended Posts

I am currently on the Navigator and was informed by the hotel Director that Voom is installed and is being tested. We the guest do not have access to it yet. They plan to go live with it on May 8 which is when NOS leaves FLL for Southampton. He did mention testing is going very well and he watched Netflix last night.

Just mentioned this as recently there were lots of questions and speculation about when it will be installed.

I had the Southampton booked and cancelled it because I thought this ship was not going to have Voom. Once Voom is confirmed, I may need to call my travel agent.

To test for Voom you need to download an app called "Ping". Then you ping an address (i.e. console.worldoftanks.com) and if it's ~300 ms then you have true Voom. If it's more than 400 ms, then you only have have the usual high orbit satellite garbage. Please post the ping rate.

Not exactly :)

Ping only tests response latency and not bandwidth, which in this case is much more indicative of the quality of the internet service you are getting.

Low ping rates are more crucial for online gaming and real time interaction services, while bandwidth is king for overall connection performance.

Having just come off Navigator yesterday (last cruise before the TA), the average bandwidth of the service on the trip was the usual dismal 0.22 Mb/s download and 0.05 Mb/s upload. Voom speeds have been reported at 25 Mb/s down and 5+ Mb/s up. To measure bandwidth and ping rates download the app SpeedTest by Ookla. It's robust and gives you a good idea of your connection quality.

One interesting factor is that all throughout the trip I was able to use Tmobile's WiFi calling feature (very finicky though and I was close to the RCI Online) to call home for free - which in theory should not have worked with those kind of dismal numbers. So, I wonder if some demand rate shaping was going on or if I just got lucky...
