bonvoyagie Posted May 26, 2016 #1 Share Posted May 26, 2016 I noticed that the Sun was in Sitka instead of Icy Strait Point - anybody know why??
shadowmeboy Posted May 26, 2016 #2 Share Posted May 26, 2016 The Sun left Vancouver on May 23rd on a 7 night roundtrip back to Vancouver, with a port stop in Sitka instead of Icy Straight Point. It will begin its North/South one direction trips at the conclusion of this trip.
zqvol Posted May 26, 2016 #3 Share Posted May 26, 2016 (edited) I don't know why it is there but it is a much better stop than ISP. Edited May 26, 2016 by zqvol
watchdiva Posted May 26, 2016 #4 Share Posted May 26, 2016 Interesting....we loved ISP on our recent Pearl 10 day cruise. Not overly developed, not IMO too touristy. Sent from my iPad using Forums mobile app
jskinsd Posted May 26, 2016 #5 Share Posted May 26, 2016 I don't know why it is there but it is a much better stop than ISP. I totally disagree. ISP is my favorite port. No tourist stores(except the cannery). I have walked into the town and seen eagles and their nest, stika black-tailed deer and I even saw a bear off the road once. And up until this year you tendered in Icy Strait. From the decks of the ship I have seen whales breaching and orca pods. It is the only port I know that if you have patience, the show will come to you. They also offer great whale yours. Going back again on the Sun in two weeks. Looking forward to using the new dock. Khgator Posted May 30, 2016 #6 Share Posted May 30, 2016 How do you check to see where a ship is on any given day? Sent from my iPad using Forums mobile app
bonvoyagie Posted July 8, 2016 Author #7 Share Posted July 8, 2016 (edited) Having cruised AK several times I can look at the ship's camera and figure out where she is - I also look at the various ship tracking sites lie AIS vessel tracking. BTW she has been making more Sitka stops of late - in fact she was there today when she should have been in Skagway. She should be in Ketchikan tomorrow - we will see - she appears to be heading towards Skagway tonight. Edited July 8, 2016 by bonvoyagie
bonvoyagie Posted July 8, 2016 Author #8 Share Posted July 8, 2016 Well she is in Juneau - go figure. It looks like the Southbound itinerary has changed for good. Is she having issues with systems? say propulsion?
DkswartzFamily Posted July 8, 2016 #9 Share Posted July 8, 2016 I am jealous, I would have preferred to have a stop there, our first trip to Alaska included a stop at Sitka and it was one of the favorites of the group. Unfortunately the subsequent trips have not included that as a stop- its a great one!
SuperCrewBear Posted July 9, 2016 #10 Share Posted July 9, 2016 My shipmate and I (from the May 10-Day Pearl cruise) were just discussing a future Alaskan cruise this evening. She asked if there was somewhere I wouldn't want to go to again. My answer was: If I had a choice between ISP and somewhere else I'd probably choose the somewhere else. ISP was okay but I'd take Sitka again in a heartbeat. It's all everyone's personal choice. I did see the whale as we were leaving the new ISP dock that evening - I've read others talk about it - he/she (the whale) must really enjoy showing off for the cruise ships. :)
