Thoughts On Denali Tour Time...

Hello all, we are planning an independent tour of AK before our cruise next year on X, Seward to Vancouver.

My question for your input is, as we have friends who live in Anchorage, we plan to visit with them for a few days before embarking on a trip (our only pre-cruise tour) to Denali for 3/2 (days/nights), then back to Anchorage for one night before heading off to Seward.

One way by train and another by bus or possibly both ways by train. Then taking a van to Seward, hopefully stopping along the way for photo op's.

TIA for your thoughts and input. Still researching places to stay while in the Denali area, as we are a party of six (6).

bon voyage

With that many people in your party, have you thought about renting a van and driving from Anchorage to Denali?

That would give you a lot more flexibility to maximize your time in the area as give you more choices of places to stay and dine. In addition, it would enable you to see other attractions on your way up and back.

My concern with trains and buses is it takes longer and limits the amount of time you have to participate in activities. And the driving is very easy in Alaska.

Agree with PP. A car gives you the ability to stop at other points of interest and wildlife sightings along the way, and gives you control of your schedule.

Without a car, you'll have to stay at hotels near the train/bus depot, or at hotels that provide shuttle service. With a car you'll have access to all lodging options. With a group of 6 you might prefer cabins ... McKinley Creekside has 2 and 3 bedroom cabins.

But if you're not comfortable driving, the train one-way and bus the other, is the best option. The train is limiting in that there's only 1 departure per day. The bus has 2.

For lodging. look a the Denali Chamber web site.

Another advantage of driving is that if you see an animal or something that you would like to stop and enjoy, you just stop the car and pull over. They do not appreciate it if you pull the emergency stop on a train because you want to take a picture of the bear or moose near the track.
