Tour guides at Herculaneum

Are there tour guides to hire at the site if not already pre hired?

There were when we went a few years back. Whether one is available when you arrive is anyone's guess.

 

But there are audio-guides for hire. :)

Was there 3 weeks ago. Arrived at opening time. No guides then. We saw a couple when we were leaving.

There are usually a few guides there (at the entrance) but it's anyone's guess as to whether they will be engaged by someone else when you arrive.

 

As mentioned, there's an audioguide; also, if you ask when you purchase your ticket they will give you (free) a nice written guide with a fair amount of detail. They don't give it automatically, though, you have to ask. (And sometimes they are out of the English language version....)

We used the audio guides and thought they were fine, we did have a guide at Pompeii but Herculaneum is much different and didn't feel the need for a guide there.

We used the audioguides and there are really good - at each "station" (clearly marked) there is basic information available and additionally the possibility to get more information if you wish.

 

No need to book a guide.
