Southampton late night dinner

We are flying from the States Sunday June 26 arriving at LHR at about 9:00pm - we are having Smiths take us to the Holiday Inn on Herbert Walker Avenue.

 

Can someone suggest someplace we could go to get something to eat after we check-in?

A flight arrival 9pm means in the Arrivals Hall around 10.15 to 10.30, Southampton around 11.30 to midnight.

On a Sunday :eek:

 

All the obvious places, even TGI Friday and the restaurant in the Grosvenor casino, both just a 5 to 10 minute walk from HI will be closed by then on a Sunday.

 

You can have an Indian curry delivered to you hotel (til 3am) from http://www.tariq-manzils.co.uk

 

Or - I hesitate to suggest this - stop off at Fleet Services on the motorway on the way to Southampton. Service is very quick, but like airport eats it's not best value. But when needs must...............

Fleet Services!!:eek: I'd go for McVomit on West Quay rather than risk Fleet Services!. At least the food (and I use the term loosely) will be freshly cooked rather than having sat under the infra red lamps at Fleet Services for 4 hours!!:D Bearing in mind you are about to enter the gorge fest of a cruise, maybe a few hours fasting wouldn't be a bad thing?!:rolleyes:

Is it too late to rearrange this end of the trip? With a 9.00 pm arrival at Heathrow, a same-day transfer to Southampton really doesn't make sense. It would be much better to stay in London - perhaps even close to the airport - and go on to Southampton the next day.

We did think very hard about that option but decided we wanted to just wake up Monday in Southampton. We are staying in London post cruise for a few days.

 

I will probably just walk to the McD and bring back a salad for my wife.

 

Is that a safe area to walk that time of night?

The Wetherspoons in the check-in area should be open until 10.30 pm. (I think it's called the Flying Chariot.) With a fair wind behind you, you could be in there by 10.00 pm and (depending on the time when their kitchen actually closes) you might therefore be able to get some food there. But at best it would still be a close-run thing.

Won't United have served dinner shortly before landing? You may find you don't need a meal on arrival? I would check with the airline to see what meals are served and when. Usually on a long haul flight you will be served meals to correspond with the time at destination, so in your case I would expect dinner round about 7pm UK time.

Unfortunately we get lunch and not dinner. We will bring plenty of snacks with us so we won't starve but will need somethings before we go to sleep. Thanx

Fleet Services or MaccyD at West Quay.

The devil or the deep blue sea ;)

Get your Smiths driver to drive past MaccyD so that you know your way

MaccyD is a 5 to 10 minute walk from the HI. Not a seedy part of town - a well-lit main road in an area for late nite revellers but probably quiet on a Sunday.

Not a great introduction to Southampton but safe enough.

There is a Marks and Spencer Simply Food in arrivals at Heathrow Terminal 2. You could pick up an excellent selection of prepacked food for a late supper in your hotel room, sandwiches, salads, cold meats and cheeses plus cold drinks including mini bottles of wines and cocktails in cans, and of course, desserts etc. even have plastic cutlery. All good quality and often our preferred choice for an evening in a hotel! You can get your take on board wine allowance at the same time.

 

I am pretty sure there is a limited room service menu at the hotel too, we usually stay there but have never used room service. You could e mail them for details.

That is the best idea I've seen yet! And a look at the M&S website suggests that this shop may be open until 2300.

We did this last year, and I agree with the OP; we got to our hotel very late, but in the a.m. we were well rested and at our destination.

 

It's just too bad that you're arriving on a Sunday night. There are several good restaurants near your hotel that won't be open that late. I recommend The Platform and Duke of Wellington Pub.

You probably won't be able to get a hot meal after about 11pm, but should be able to order sandwiches with a bit of salad garnish or other cold offerings and possibly soup. If you email the hotel, they should be able to give an idea of what may be available.

 

However, like others I would suggest picking up some sort of cold offering from the airport or perhaps a shop in the motorway service station, as either would be cheaper than room service. You will have tea and coffee facilities in your room and can ask for more milk, coffee etc. if needed at no charge.

 

Another thought is can you get some dried soup to make in a cup (those sort of things are marketed as , "Cup a soups" over here). We often take a few on holidays and find them useful at times when we just need something a bit tasty and some crackers could be brought with them, or the soup could make a good tasty addition to a sandwich, especially after a day of travelling.

 

I agree about getting to Southampton on the same day, if you are booked in for breakfast, you will be well fed the next morning.

I did send an email to the hotel and they responded the next day (impressive) and they have 5 or 6 sandwiches/salads on standby for late night snacking(6-10 GBP). We are planning on having the car service driver wait 10-15 minutes while we run through the M&S Simply Food shop in the arrival hall at Terminal 2. I figure if we can get enough to put us to sleep when can start anew with Breakfast in the morning. Thanx

Grab yourselves a bottle of winter help you sleep and some nibbles to ease your hunger pangs then there are lots of options in Southampton for the next morning.
