Questions re Transportation to Grand in SFO

We've never used Uber but based on some of the information read on this forum we're considering using it in SFO in a couple of weeks when we sail on the Grand.

Checked out the app but have some questions. Since many of you have indicated you use Uber hopefully someone can answer these for me:

1)- Is the price quoted when you request the car an estimate or flat rate? If an estimate, if we run into heavy traffic going into the city, how is additional cost figured? We typically avoid taxis because of the potential for high costs in the event of traffic so is the same true for Uber?

2)- Was surprised at the number of bad reviews on the android version of the app. Have any of you had issues using it?

3)- Are there restrictions for Uber cars to pick up at the pier?

4)- Would you recommend Uber or a car service or shuttle?

Thanks in advance for your help.

We don't use uber, just a regular taxi. You don't say where you will be in route. We are out by SFO, the airport, generally plan $150 each way, often pay less, you can ask the taxi driver up front for an estimate.

Suspect you will get others who do use uber to answer your questions directly.

Other options:

Super shuttle van services.

BART the local rapid transit which is available at the airport... once in SF, get off at Embarcadero and you could get a taxi from the Hyatt Regency hotel easily to the port.

Sorry for not being clear. We're going from SFO a/p to Fisherman's Wharf. Then at end of cruise from Pier 27 to a/p.

BART is not an option for us. (Can't schlepp luggage). It has to be a shuttle, taxi or car service.

Super Shuttle. We've never had any trouble with them Always on time. Make sure you get one that takes you directly to the airport and doesn't make stops along the way to pick people up from various hotels around town. Cheaper than taking a taxi and I would never ever consider using Uber.

If you want a fixed cost look at taking Super Shuttle. I think it cost us around $65 for a taxi to SFO a few months ago. It was early on Saturday so no traffic, however we used SS to get to the port.

We used Uber many times pre and even post cruise while in SFO a few months ago. Had no problems and it was a fraction of the cost of taxis.

Since you are a new Uber customer you will probably get special offers or even a free ride or two.

We stayed at the Hyatt Embarcadero a few days precruise and even though we could see the ship from our balcony it would have been nearly impossible to drag luggage that far.

Mike:)
