Zigggypup Posted July 29, 2016 #1 Share Posted July 29, 2016 Was just wondering if their is anything to do outside the gates of the port on foot? Any decent local restaurants in walking distance? Thanks in advance.
FloridaGator Posted August 4, 2016 #2 Share Posted August 4, 2016 No. The area immediately outside the gate isn't too bad, but go any further and you get into some very poor, run down areas.
CCC3 Posted August 18, 2016 #3 Share Posted August 18, 2016 (edited) Nothing really within walking distance. Seems like inside the port area there was a food vender who sold Jamaican patties & Ting soda. Edited August 18, 2016 by CCC3
togar Posted August 18, 2016 #4 Share Posted August 18, 2016 No. The area immediately outside the gate isn't too bad, but go any further and you get into some very poor, run down areas. Would you consider the area dangerous? thanks
CCC3 Posted August 18, 2016 #5 Share Posted August 18, 2016 Just speaking for myself, no. Everyone has his/her own comfort level, and I would not have been comfortable outside the port area, just walking around.

CCC3 Posted August 18, 2016 #7 Share Posted August 18, 2016 Oops, I just re-read my above post, and what I MEANT to say is that yes I wouldn't venture outside the gates, because I would not feel comfortable. Others might, but I wouldn't. Our bus driver on the excursion advised us NOT to leave the gated area, but to shop & get food inside, as he (native Jamaican) said it wasn't safe for tourists. 12reca Posted August 28, 2016 #9 Share Posted August 28, 2016 Prices inside the terminal were 4 times more expensive...well, just like at any other cruise terminal I guess. We did not really like the port itself. Visited Ocho Rios before and had a great time.
MikeBTN Posted September 15, 2016 #10 Share Posted September 15, 2016 Outside the gate isn't any different than most other Caribbean stops. Plenty of police presence. There is a really cool food tour that we took last stop. 5 or 6 stops, plenty of food, and you get to see a bit of the city too. I would highly recommend it. The pattys are great. http://jamaicaculinarytours.com/
Rare broberts Posted September 15, 2016 #11 Share Posted September 15, 2016 It has been a few years since I was there, but directly outside the Falmouth port gates is a tourist shopping area. Lots of small shops selling the usual stuff but also locally made items. I can appreciate that some may feel uncomfortable in that milieu as there are usually some aggressive peddlers and Jamaican accents can be difficult to parse. But in the shopping area proper I never felt particularly uncomfortable.

Just to add there is a heavy presence of what I will call tourism representatives that monitor the area. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
Cruise a holic Posted September 16, 2016 #13 Share Posted September 16, 2016 If we are on a ship sailing to Jamacia, we walk around the pier area and enjoy the amenities of the ship
carostad Posted October 12, 2016 #14 Share Posted October 12, 2016 Hi there, last time we were in Falmouth we did a tour with Jamaican Culinary Tours. It was amazing! I'm wondering if it will be exactly the same though if we repeat it though (which wouldn't be all bad...) Has anyone done this tour more than once? What was your experience like? I also noticed there might be another company doing a similar tour. Any comparison between them? Thanks!
