Breakaway and Smoke......

Why is it that every time a smoking question is presented people feel the need to get up on their soap box and preach? If you can answer the posters question, great. If you can't, then don't hijack the thread with every smoking experience that you have had.

Because of the idiotic comments like post #19

We were on the BA in 2014. It was pretty bad. But we're going on it again in 7 weeks so take that for what it's worth lol.

I did not see anyone smoking by the pool, though. If I do I will say something. Otherwise we just find someone else on the ship to go to :)

The main problems areas we saw were the casino (we don't gamble so no big deal), the Noodle place and raw bar could not be inhabited, and the pool area on one side of the ship was not usable.

To the poster of #19: You are violating ship regulations and maritime law. And your smoke will not carry off the ship like the smokestacks (those are 50 feet above you). so you put out your cigarettes in a glass of water, but what about the ashes? Your smoke will eddy and swirl around the back of the ship and into the balconies and open doors of your neighbors. We aren't going to "deal with it." We will hunt you down and report you and hope you get ejected from the cruise with your cancer sticks.

Well not quite true in one regard ...depending on where you are located on the ship they will do a wash down of your balcony due to smokestack ashes at least a few times during my cruises .I have had this happen on a few cruises especially in AFT cabins. For my mother it's the perfume that has "taken her down" Our last NCL tour they were repairing tile and the glue they used in lobby actually was scary because she became so ill so quickly I needed to beg an escort to room for her. SO I DECLARE we need to ban all perfume and perfume soaps and all glue tiling...well not really.some people are highly allergic to peanuts where even a smell can send them into an episode..Smoking is the "hot issue" of the day....but there are many other allergens that can cause serious issues for people.....should we ban everything? OMG we can make it a new movement LETS BAN EVERYTHING THAT EMITS AN ODOR !

Sounds like the makings of a new show on the Travel Channel. "The Cruise Ship Cigarette Hunter" LMAO

We have cruised on Royal Caribbean, Costa, Carnival, and Disney before and it seems the Casino is always pretty nasty smelling. In reading this thread, it sounds like smoking on the balcony is not permitted? Is this correct? It will be great to actually be able to enjoy our balcony.

After watching my mother get diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer 20 months ago and die the most horrendous, agonizing death, I just try to avoid cigarette smoke if at all possible.

Is there a list of smoking areas on the different ships?

Thanks, Sue

You don't get it do you?

Peanuts allergies affect some and yes can cause death

Tile glue affects some and can cause a reaction

But

Cigarette smoke while it may not bother some people....can and will cause cancer...regardless of whether

You are a smoker or non smoker

You are bothered by smoke or not

You are allergic to smoke or not

Also a person who is allergic to say peanuts or bee stings has an epi pen at the ready

At this late date with all we know about second hand smoke I'm dumbfounded that any smoker can even attempt to defend the habit of smoking in public

You didn't smell smoke from the Disney casino as they don't have a casino

Just use an Ecig and then no-one can complain about you smoking.

Even then there'll always be that one person who has to complain about it, even if you're in the smoking area and obeying all of the rules.

Sadly there are people who will specifically go out of their way just to have a moan because they don't smoke, or don't like it or whatever - get over yourself!

Where in this thread are ecigs even mentioned?

The op is a non smoker and asking about smoke on the ship not about trying to quit smoking

No one here is discussing trying to quit smoking but rather trying to avoid the smoke given off by smokers

Btw ecigs are not allowed on balconies it in cabins.

I guess you don't understand the question being posed in this thread

I understood the initial question, however the discussion veered towards peoples attitudes towards smoking on ship - to which I am chiming in.

I understand not everyone smokes, that's their choice and the majority of the ships are smoke free.

But if you're expecting a totally smoke free environment stay at home.

Ok but just an FYI ecigs on a ship are limited to the smoking areas as well and cannot be used in cabins balconies and other non smoking areas

Your post makes it sound as though ecigs are allowed everywhere and

It assumes all smokers are trying to quit smoking

Most if not all of the replies have, in fact, dealt with the question as people were sharing their personal experiences on this particular ship. Case in point: my experience was that I had to avoid the whole indoor area where the casino, le Bistro, Noodle Bar, etc, were because of the permeating smoke, just like a number of other cruisers.

The only off point replies have been, interestingly enough, the larger font rantings of a few posters...

We will be on the BA in October. I have a cabin in the aft and plan on smoking out on my balcony when the ship is in motion. My smoke will go behind the ship, just like the smoke coming out of the ships smokestack. I always put cigarette out in a glass of water, so no chance of fire. Deal with it people !!!

I am sure you won't be the only one! Don't forget to have something to hide the evidence with. If some crew member comes asking just deny, deny, deny...enjoy your cruise!

I've sailed BA twice. I don't recall smoke being an issue. I did smell some in the casino, but moving over to the non-smoking section alleviated most, if not all.

I did see the smoking room and the area outside. But, didn't hang there so no issues. Plus, the cigar room seemed to be enclosed, so no issues.

Aside from those two places, I can't say there were any issues.

I do agree. Soapboxers on both sides do get tiresome with stats, figures, rules, rule breakers, opinions, etc. This is true of all the cruise lines and seeing the posts here.

Go on your cruise. If you don't smoke, stay out of the areas where there might be smoke. If you do smoke, stay in the areas where there is smoking.

If that doesn't work, and you still have issues, you aren't going to change anything here. Maybe find a different sort of vacation?

Just a suggestion.

Not trying to make any assumptions :P

My main point was that even as an ecig user fully obeying the ships rules (only in smoking areas etc) that there is always a few people who will go out of their way to have a whinge - just because they don't smoke themselves.

But to OP, there isn't really a huge problem with smoking on ship so you should be fine :)

I am not familiar with e-cigs, do they not give off any smell or smoke but have nicotine for the user? If so, why doesn't everyone just use them? Then everyone could/would be happy?? The people who don't want the nasty smell or cancer, COPD, emphysema, from second hand smoke would be happy and the people who want the nicotine would be happy? I have always wondered why with all the technology we have, no one has invented a cigarette that didn't impose on other people or stink, maybe ecigs do this? That way kids who have parents who smoke would be safe too? I guess I need to look up ecigs and see how they work?

Thanks,

Sue

I know people get sick of topics, but I never cruised Norwegian and just booked Breakaway for Thanksgiving and can't stand even the slightest scent of smoke. I booked the package for three specialty restaurants. Which ones are completely safe from smoke and the stale smell it leaves behind? I crossed off Le Bistro sadly. But how about La Cucina and Cagneys? And I like to drink, is that martini bar on the 8th deck port side complete fresh air? Can not think of name of that bar. SHakers maybe? Thank you for your patience with this new Norwegian cruiser/intense second hand smoke hater. :)

I don't recall the location of all the bars but that is probably because I avoided them if they were near the casino

My suggestion is to look at the deck plans for 6/7/8

The casino is 7

The upper and lower areas in 6 and 8 are totally open to the casino and will be inundated with casino smoke

Also look where le bistro is located on deck 6 and that will give you an idea just how far the casino smoke travels

Cagneys and moderno will be fine as will cucina

Teppanyaki I never saw so can't say where it's located

It doesn't matter that some posters didn't smell it or weren't bothered by it....the casino and its environs on 6/7/8 will be very very difficult to walk through and use for many many pax.

It's a fact due to the excessive smoking and overall poor inefficient design of the BA

I just don't understand why 30 years ago smoking was permitted everywhere, restaurants, work places, theaters, arenas, malls, break rooms at schools and we never heard complaints. Now you could be smoking somewhere and someone 30 feet away complains about it.

I am not a smoker by the way.

Im not a smoker and dont care for the smell of smoke. I enjoy some time in the casino and I know that dealing with smoke is part of that. Not my personal preference but I deal with it.

All that being said, how can you say its a fact and that people cant walk through it when others have said they didn't smell it or weren't bothered by it, or weren't as bothered by it as you are?

I really think that it's a case by case situation in terms of whether the individual finds those areas tolerable. Different people have different tolerance for handling a smoky area.

It's just impossible to not smell smoke when walking thru the casino

Why? Simply because it's a smoking venue

Wether it bothers someone or not is not the point

The point is that if you walk thru the casino and don't smell smoke then the problem is more with a persons sense of smell or lack thereof

The casino is smoky and you can smell it even though there are some people that won't be bothered by it
