Breakaway and Smoke......

If you have been on the Breakaway, what was your experience with cigarette smoke? I am used to the casinos being so smokey I cannot go in them, but I'm reading more and more accounts from people saying that smoking is allowed in many areas on the Breakaway and it is very noticeable. I'm particularly interested in the Waterfront area. Is there a smoking and nonsmoking side, or is it a free for all??

The whole ship is covered in a constant cloud or cigarette smoke lol.

I've read that it gets smoky in the casino area and because it's somewhat open and central it seems to travel a bit around the surrounding areas.

But it also seems like depending on how sensitive you are to it and how much you're thinking about it and sniffing for it plays a part.

If you don't like smoke then forget Malting's on the Waterfront. Deck 8. Smoking allowed at outside tables.

For non smoking visit Shakers on deck 8 port side. Quiet peaceful and no smoke.

We don't spend time in the casino so cannot comment on that.

Hope you have a great cruise!

Been on BA twice - the first time, June 2013, the smoke was bad

I think it is really based on the number of passengers that smoke.

This time, June 2016, the smoking section was a cloud -- but it was contained. The amount of smoke and the smell will vary by where you play. (All non-smokers I know, including myself, are convinced the winning machines are in the smoking section :D)

If smoke bothers you, you can avoid it. I hate the smell and I was always able to find a smoke free area in the casino and the majority of the ship is smoke free. I never had the experience of smoke smell lingering on my clothes or upon opening my suitcase when I got home - and we spent most nights in the casino usually until 2 or 3 am.

It's really nice that all balconies are smoke free

Waterfront - stay away from Maltings. Indoors - Maltings opens into the closed cigar lounge. Would not be my recommendation for a cocktail pre lacucina dinner.

Have a wonderful cruise!

There are only a few areas with smokers. Overall, you can enjoy a smoke free cruise.

Well not quite true unfortunately

The casino smoke will go thru ocean 6/7/8

Plus you won't be able to sit at the open area tables at le bistro and I've been told the smoke smell does go inside le bistro as well

Yes you will have smoke free poolside and decks and mdr and main atrium but you will want to find a way to avoid the 6/7/8 atrium area which is a total shame as its beautiful but the smoke from the casino permeates it

Forget the sushi noodle place as it will be smoky from this just like le bistro is

Fortunately you cannot smell the smoke in headliners

I have to agree with this poster as this was our experience too. We left Le Bistro halfway through entrees as we couldn't enjoy the food, all we could smell was smoke, even though we got moved to a back corner table. Maybe it comes down to what you are used too. I come from a country where smoking is not permitted in any indoor areas including casinos or near doorways so it is not a smell I encounter in my day to day life over here, plus only 17% of the population smoke, in my city it's 15%, so the smoke smell on Breakaway was very obvious to me.

We have fined at Le Bistro on -away ships 9 times and have not had that experience. I cinder the outside seating at Bistro overflow for those who refuse to follow the dress code. So we would never accept a table in the hall way which may get casino smoke.

We were on the BA a few weeks ago. We are very smoke sensitive as our son has allergies and can't be around smoke. We found that only the casino and Maltings outside were places we didn't want to be due to smoke. Never had a problem anywhere else on the ship. I think it depends on the individual.

We were on the Breakaway that left NY on June 19th from NY to Bermuda. I have posted this on my trip review but we found that the aroma of smoke from the casino permeated the entire 6th/7th.8th floor atrium areas making them unusable. Maybe I am more sensitive than most but this was the most smoking I have seen on a ship since the first cruise I was on back in 2003.

Smoking outside on the Waterfront by the cigar bar outside made walking around the ship on that deck unpleasant although you could find a comfortable place to sit on the other side. We did find that as the week went on, there were people sitting and smoking at the pool area outside the smoking area, people standing and smoking while watching their kids in the wading area and people smoking on their balconies below and above us which we did report to Guest Services. We had a group of officers strolling on the 8th deck stop and ask us how we enjoyed the cruise and we complained about the smoking all over the place and the aroma from the casino and they responded that it has been an ongoing issue and the design of the ship relative to where the casino is located is a big problem.

Stay home and enjoy your smoke free air. I am not a smoker but for crying out loud, can't we all get along? Some people smoke, its not illegal and thats their right. If it is really such a big issue for you, STAY HOME!!

I really hope you are kidding here....

It's not alright when smokers smoke in non smoking areas like the wading pool and balcony

Non smokers do not and should not compromise their rights for smokers who break the rules

Btw drinking alcohol and getting drunk is legal for adults

Should we let drunks drive? Also to just get along?

I'll not cruise the ba again for these very reasons

Pax who witness balcony etc smoking have every right to expect it to be stopped and if not demand a refund

Yes its extreme and no I'm not saying lawsuit free cruise or huge obc...

I'm saying demanding a full refund because Ncl DID NOT keep you safe and did not enforce their own rules

The risk of fire from a cig off the balcony is massive.

If I had spoken to those officers and got an answer like that I would have asked them to accompany me to guest services and have gs make a call to Miami and arrange for my refund

Would it actually happen? Probably not but the point is Ncl cannot have their officers be fully aware of pax breaking the smoking rules and just turn the other cheek

Ftlog our safety is their primary concern isn't it?

No water bottles being brought onboard is evidence of that. Lol

We will be on the BA in October. I have a cabin in the aft and plan on smoking out on my balcony when the ship is in motion. My smoke will go behind the ship, just like the smoke coming out of the ships smokestack. I always put cigarette out in a glass of water, so no chance of fire. Deal with it people !!!

The odor of smoke from the BA casino is HORRENDOUS. Unfortunately it affects all the other venues nearby such as O'Sheehans and the stores and the atrium. Really, the casino needs to go non-smoking due to the design of the ship because the horrendous stench is quite overwhelming.

Well I would never choose this ship again. Not sure if I will ever go on another cruise as this was our 5th cruise since 2003 (maybe that is enough cruising) but if so I will more closely examine the ship design. This was the first cruise I have been on in which the casino was so prominent. On all the other cruises (Celebrity, Holland America and Princess twice once to the Caribbean and once to Alaska) there was a casino but it was off somewhere and not smack in the center of the ship.

The smoking was certainly enough to complain to Guest Services about but despite that my husband and I enjoyed our vacation as it served our purposes, leaving from NYC and seeing Bermuda. If I had a child in the wading pool area and people were smoking there while I was there with a child trust that I would have taken it to a higher level as exposing your child or yourself to second hand smoke is a health hazard.

Why is it that every time a smoking question is presented people feel the need to get up on their soap box and preach? If you can answer the posters question, great. If you can't, then don't hijack the thread with every smoking experience that you have had.
