RickT Posted October 30, 2005 #1 Share Posted October 30, 2005 I've taken a couple cruises off from RCCL and cruised Celebrity instead. Without getting into the who has better Food debate I'd like to instead get your feedback on the number of meals RCCL serves (or used to serve) with Rice. I couldn't help but notice on my last two RCCL cruises (June 2002, March 2003) that rice seemed to be everywhere on the menu. In viewing some current menu's posted to the cruiseclues web site it seems this is still the case. Can any recent cruisers comment? I definitely prefer the side dishes that were offered on Celeb. Mainly vegetables and potato. Still looking forward to my March 2006 cruise on the Brilliance but would be looking more forward to it if I don't see Rice with every meal. ondeckatsea Posted October 30, 2005 #2 Share Posted October 30, 2005 Now that you've mentioned it, they do serve an awful lot of rice. I found it kind of odd that they served it with lobster. Anyone from New England knows rice doesn't go with lobster. A nice big baked potatoe would be a lot better.
Alexis Posted October 30, 2005 #3 Share Posted October 30, 2005 You can get a baked potato anytime you want for dinner. You just have to choose from the alternate items on the menu which are available every night. You can pick and choose from this list. I had chicken, a baked potato and vegetables almost every night of my cruise because I am a weight watcher.
Taters Posted October 30, 2005 #4 Share Posted October 30, 2005 Even though my last RCI cruise was in 2002, I DID notice that almost every main dish on the buffett during lunch and dinner was served with rice or was a casserole of some sort. Blech! I felt that food was better on Carnival. Taters
mkringen Posted October 30, 2005 #5 Share Posted October 30, 2005 We did the 4 night Baja cruise at the end of August. I do not recall having rice once. I know I saw it in the Windjammer and I think it came with my sisters fish one night. Other than that I didn't see any rice. What I do remember is LOTS of potatos. I had mashed potatos at least 3 different ways and they were all excellent. Michelle in SoCal
savblucrab Posted October 30, 2005 #6 Share Posted October 30, 2005 we were on the Mariner August 28th and we did not have rice at all..we did have baked potatoes and mashed potatoes several times during the week...No problem for me, I love rice and well potatoes also:)
RED318is Posted October 30, 2005 #7 Share Posted October 30, 2005 In many cultures rice is eaten with every meal. I believe many of the chefs on RCI are from India, so that is probably why most dishes are served with rice. Personally, I love rice and I love the food on RCI. Murphy Posted October 30, 2005 #8 Share Posted October 30, 2005 I don't ever remember getting rice with our meals on the Enchantment earlier this month, but we got an aweful lot of couscous/polenta mousset in a cup thingys. Would have much prefered a little plain old rice!
wrp96 Posted October 30, 2005 #9 Share Posted October 30, 2005 I would gladly eat rice with every meal, but I don't remember having it available at every meal on my last cruise. It may be that I'm just so used to eating it that I don't pay attention anymore. Remember - Support your friendly American Rice Growers! (i.e. support my cruising habit:D ). Luna Posted October 30, 2005 #10 Share Posted October 30, 2005 We were on the Oct 2 sailing on the Jewel. I, too, noticed rice served frequently (I noticed because I don't especially care for it) - they even served it with chicken cacciatore! With the chicken cacciatore, I asked them to substitute pasta, other evenings, I just didn't eat it. Don't be afraid to ask for something else. Dawniepoo Posted October 30, 2005 #11 Share Posted October 30, 2005 They actually had rice at the buffet for breakfast last Sept. on the Mariner. I thought that was odd.

goneclear Posted October 30, 2005 #13 Share Posted October 30, 2005 Bring on the rice, Love it, with lobster too. No complaints here and I am not Indian or from India. Just different strokes for different folks.:D
Ohestu Posted October 30, 2005 #14 Share Posted October 30, 2005 There is no such thing as too much rice. I love rice :)
abridalmaven Posted October 30, 2005 #15 Share Posted October 30, 2005 I do not eat starches anymore, so I do not even notice if they were on the menu, I just ask for real food... extra veggies.
cruisingnewyorkers Posted October 31, 2005 #16 Share Posted October 31, 2005 I remember a cruise on AOS in 2002, every meal came with rice, I didn't even want to look at rice after the cruise. This past year rice wasn't served with every meal like it was in the past. Maybe a couple times during the week. There were potatoes at a couple of meals. firstcruise05 Posted October 31, 2005 #17 Share Posted October 31, 2005 we were on the Mariner August 28th and we did not have rice at all..we did have baked potatoes and mashed potatoes several times during the week...No problem for me, I love rice and well potatoes also:) I was going to say the same thing...I just sailed on the Mariner 2 weeks ago and for the life of me I don't remember any rice being served at all. With lobster? I can't remember WHAT was served with the lobster...It was called fishermans platter and there was shrimp and lobster tails but I don't remember what else came with it. gumballz Posted October 31, 2005 #18 Share Posted October 31, 2005 Isn't rice filling? If so.....maybe they're trying to fill us up on rice so we don't eat as much lobster and escargot? ;)
bargainshopper Posted October 31, 2005 #19 Share Posted October 31, 2005 I was on Navigator early this month and I don't remember there were a lot of rice being served in the dinning room. OTOH, there are always some rice dishes in the Windjammer Cafe/Jade Restaurant.
imsulin2 Posted October 31, 2005 #20 Share Posted October 31, 2005 I didn't realize that the food servers on RCI were from India!! I always thought they were from Indonesia or the Phillipines. BIIIIIIG difference! I'm just sayin'..............! Anyway, I love rice in any dish!!
bubbie617 Posted October 31, 2005 #21 Share Posted October 31, 2005 I don't understand the problem. If your entree comes with rice and you want something else, most waiters will turn themselves inside out to get you what you want. Good grief! It's your vacation. Lighten up! beachchick Posted October 31, 2005 #22 Share Posted October 31, 2005 They actually had rice at the buffet for breakfast last Sept. on the Mariner. I thought that was odd. Not at all. As mentioned, rice is a standard component at all meals (including breakfast) in many cultures. They might think our pancakes drowning in butter and syrup served with eggs and bacon and sausage was a strange way to start the day. I think it's great to offer choices for different tastes. beachchick
WannaCruiseSoon Posted October 31, 2005 #23 Share Posted October 31, 2005 I was on the Explorer and I can't remember having rice at all with dinner. It may hae been what I chose the only rice I remember was during lunch (a chinese-style chicken dish) and at the buffet.
