HamishHamish Posted September 13, 2016 #1 Share Posted September 13, 2016 Does anybody know the scheduled date as to when the Spanish Steps are to be re-opened. Not sure if it is worth visiting if you can't walk up them
hexdragon Posted September 13, 2016 #2 Share Posted September 13, 2016 I have also heard that it is now illegal to sit and eat gelato on them, is this true?
Rare Hlitner Posted September 13, 2016 #3 Share Posted September 13, 2016 I have also heard that it is now illegal to sit and eat gelato on them, is this true? In late April, part of the steps were open and other parts (about half) were turned into a major construction area. We heard that plans were to totally close the steps (suspect this has now been done). The project is supposed to be finished by the Spring of 2017....although we would not hold our breath. Rare steamboats Posted September 13, 2016 #6 Share Posted September 13, 2016 They are opening September 21st. As far as I remember it´s been illegal to eat there before (same with the Trevi Fountain). BTW Bulgari paid for the renovation and now askes for a fence to close it during the night (to avoid new damages). steamboats
Rare Hlitner Posted September 13, 2016 #7 Share Posted September 13, 2016 Ahhh, so they are scheduled to reopen next week! One can sure hope :). When it comes to Italy we will have to see it...to truly believe they finished. We were fortunate to see the newly finished Trevi Fountain...and it was worth the long wait. It is more beautiful then ever...having been completely cleaned and repaired. Hank
euro cruiser Posted September 13, 2016 #8 Share Posted September 13, 2016 Regarding eating, it has been illegal for a few years now to eat on/around any of the national monuments. This was a necessary change as too many people were treating them like their personal picnic area (and afterwards, personal garbage area). There are plenty of places to eat, no need to cop a squat on the steps with your gelato.
