Titan_Cruiser Posted October 14, 2016 #1 Share Posted October 14, 2016 I was looking for a multi-plug expander to use in our cabin. I know to avoid wires but does it matter if it is a surge protector or not? Will this one be allowed? https://www.amazon.com/Belkin-Mini-Surge-Protector-Charger/dp/B0015DYMVO/ref=sr_1_10?ie=UTF8&qid=1476470222&sr=8-10&keywords=3+plug+extender
heirway Posted October 14, 2016 #2 Share Posted October 14, 2016 I have used this same plug on a couple of cruises without an issue. But I did not know that devices with surge protectors, and this device has one, are not allowed. With that being the case I have since purchased a power cube. If they see it, they should not allow it. It is the surge protector that makes it dangerous onboard a ship. Try this instead. https://www.amazon.com/GE-Heavy-Duty-3-Outlet-54203/dp/B000EU4HBO/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1476471431&sr=8-5&keywords=three+outlet+tap

Sitzmark Posted October 14, 2016 #6 Share Posted October 14, 2016 We've used the same Belkin for the last 15 or so cruises. Never had an issue. I've used one before with no problem also. However I did have a power strip surge suppressor malfunction at work and cause several other strips to blow up. You might want to read this to better understand how surge protection can be a specific danger on a ship. http://www.uscg.mil/tvncoe/Documents/safetyalerts/SurgeProtectiveDevices.pdf

As I continue to say, on all these threads, using a surge protector on a ship is just like heart disease, it is a silent killer, that can strike with no warning. Actually, the longer you use a surge protector on ships, the more likely they are to fail, as the repetitive subjecting it to possible reverse voltages causes the MOV semi-conductors to fail sooner. chengkp75 Posted October 14, 2016 #12 Share Posted October 14, 2016 Can somebody enlighten me - why is surge-portection an increase risk to the cruise ship? It is not a risk to the ship, it is a risk to your equipment and cabin, as the surge protectors are not designed for the particular grounding system used on ships, and can cause fires. Here is the USCG Safety Notice about surge protectors (and consumer power strips as well): https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwjU8MenodvPAhWCSj4KHYaRCT4QFggcMAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.uscg.mil%2Ftvncoe%2FDocuments%2Fsafetyalerts%2FSurgeProtectiveDevices.pdf&usg=AFQjCNEPXVHLCc4iP8x_ha6tGKkxy6aCQw&bvm=bv.135475266,d.cWw Here is a post by a CC member who questioned my statements about surge protectors, has an electrical engineering background, and took my advice and researched this with maritime experts, and came away as one of my supporters in this fight: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showpost.php?p=48102515&postcount=
