Does this sound fair?

I have an ocean view family cabin for my family of 5. My daughter wants her friend to come along Which would require me to have 2 rooms. I am getting 3rd and 4th guest free in the cabin I have booked. So here is my question, is it fair to ask her friend to pay the full fare for guest 2 on the second cabin? This switch would still be costing me $500 more out of my pocket.

Sorry, misunderstood. I would then split the cost down the middle.

I am ok with paying the additional $500 as. It will give my husband and I more room and privacy. I just felt guilty charging them full fare when 3rd and 4th passenger in room would be free with that promo

Then you should charge them what you feel comfortable charging them.

I think for me it would depend on how old your daughter and her friend are. I'd have a hard time charging full fare to a 12 year old. But if 18, more justifiable. In any event, I agree with having her pay the incremental cost. I probably wouldn't charge her the $500 change fee... I'd say that's on you, because if your daughter had decided to invite her from the get-go then you wouldn't have had to change your plans and incur the fee.

The $500 additional would be the result of paying full fare for my daughter as passenger 1 instead of the 5th passenger rate in our original cabin that I would be paying if her friend didn't come.

If you are going to put 4 kids in one cabin, then divide the fare 4 ways. If you end up paying 3//4 of the total fare that is the right way to do it. To make the friend pay the full fare as part of the second cabin and put two of your children in there, is not the way I would do it.

totally agree... at first I thought only your daughter and her friend were going to be in the 2nd cabin, but if your 3 children and the friend are going to be in one cabin, the only fair way would be to split the cost 4 ways... I can't see having the friend pay 1/2 the cabin cost..

It would probably just be the two girls in the cabin. For booking purposes and for promotion I thought about booking the other two in the same cabin but I think it'd works out the same either way.

I agree with this also.

It will cost you a little more having the friend pay 1/4 vs. 1/2 but think of it another way. If you and your husband dad decided independently to put your three kids in a separate cabin to get the privacy, you would have paid 100% of that second cabin. Now you are just paying 75%. So the friend is saving you 25%.:)

I was typing when you posted.

So who will be in each cabin? Not for booking but actually?

So you'll effectively ask them to pay your child's fare and their child's fare?

Sounds fair to me.

No not al all. If the friend comes I would have to get an extra cabin as my family of 5 is in a family Ocean view. I am already paying a 5th passenger rate for my daughter which is @$500. To switch her to another cabin with her friend the cost for my daughter will be @$1100 and the second guest rate would be the same.

I would put my daughter and her friend in the second cabin. My other daughter (my kids are Triplets) who is the same age would most likely want to be in that cabin (but I'm not sure). My son would stay with me as I would not have the friend sharing a cabin with my son who is the same age.

Maybe I should explain a little further. I chose this cruise and this cabin because it was a great deal for us and was affordable. We got a casino comp for the first 2 guests (so it was only costing us @ $368 each), 3rd and 4th guest sail free ($168 each) and the 5th passenger rate @$500).

Finally I was able to take a cruise without getting 2 rooms and it costing us $5,000 - $6000 because of the comp and 3rd and 4th sale free promo.

Check with your CAS person, if you and your husband are both rated players, perhaps you each would qualify for a free cabin. If so then for booking purposes put each of you in separate cabins and then rearrange the sleeping arrangements once on board.

I didn't qualify. I never put my casino card when I was playing the slots which I should have and will now in the future. My husband plays the tables. Hopefully next time we can do that.

I would think your daughter's friend's dad would completely understand if you explained the situation. "Look, right now it's X for the cruise. If your daughter wants to join, it's going to cost Y because we'll have to get an extra room. We're happy to have her join, but I just ask that you pay Y-X."

It's not your fault you got a great deal, why should you have to carry additional financial burden? Unless you think your daughter will be absolutely miserable without her friend (and if she's a pre-teen or teenager, I could see this happening, lol) or her friend's parents don't have the financial capability to pay, then I might pitch in a little. But asking them to pay the difference is totally fair.

Based on the additional info... you said it currently costs $500 for your daughter. By moving her to a second cabin, she will cost $1100. The friend will also cost $1100. You have triplets, two girls and a boy. Your second girl will likely sleep in the second cabin.

So I would take the total cost of the cabin ($2200), divide by three, and charge the friend $733.

I get that you don't want to provide too many details, but is the friend 18 or still a minor? If she is a minor wouldn't she be on your credit card for her key card account? How are you going to handle drinks, excursions, specialty meals, games, etc. Whatever you decide, you really need to clearly communicate this with the friend or her parents in advance.

I think it's very nice of you to let this friend come on your family vacation. Curious as to why only one of your kids gets to bring a friend, even though they are all the same age?

Because by making the change, the OP will also derive some benefit for their family of 5, compared to their original booking (i.e. only 3 or 4 people in their cabin instead of 5). If the only net result was that someone else's child got to go on vacation, I doubt we'd be having this discussion.

Actually I was perfectly fine with the arrangements the way they were. This friend had invited her to go on a cruise with them Easter Week. He cost was going to be almost as much as I am paying for my family of 5 to go on his vacation so I said no.

I am not trying to benefit from the situation, if anything it is just costing me more. It's not hat my daughter needs to HAVE a friend. She has a brother and sister the same age! Lol
