Don't miss.....

a helicopter ride over the glaciers.... can do this at any port, expensive but worth it!!! There are lots of options, just do one that interests you. Loved it.

grilled fresh salmon.....can do this at any port

shopping in Skagway for clothing, t-shirts, sweatshirts, souvenirs.... selection and prices are better than other ports though you will see the same stuff at many ports, Skagway seems to have more selection

We can't wait to go back, we had such a great time.

Our 2 favorite excursions were on our cruise...

Skagway - Glacier Point Wilderness Safari - we thoroughly enjoyed this trip. It was 6 hours long, but worth it. The men who ran the tour were very informative, interesting and funny. We were able to walk up on the glacier, see some of the beautiful scenery, and had such a fun time.

Juneau - Mendenhall helicopter ride - without a doubt the best thing we ever did. I realize the weather can play a role in this, but we were fine. We actually had amazing weather, we could see mountains that were miles away!

There are hundreds of "musts" in Alaska. BUT, most important is to figure out YOUR interests. Too many times- I see posts, that are wavering on tour bookings- where it's clear, they aren't that interested, BUT, someone told them it's a "must do".
This is especially critical given that it is seems unlikely that any three posts in this thread outline three different "Don't Miss" items that pertain to a single port-of-call which can all be done during a single port call.

Having said that, I think it would be an interesting challenge for those who know these ports best to suggest any truly universal attractions - "Don't Miss" items that can be enjoyed by people of all ages, physical capabilities, and of the most diverse interests.

On the topic of excursions..... one that should be mentioned on some ships which have Tracy Arm in the morning and Juneau in the afternoon.... there will be a morning small boat excursion to explore Tracy Arm, while the cruise ship continues it's journey to Juneau.

  • This excursion will be the first to sell out before the cruise ship leave Vancouver. If you want it... do pre-book.
  • By doing the small boat transfer... you save hours and 50 miles of not retracing the distance for those doing the trip from Juneau return.

We had a great excursion out of Skagway with the Glacier Point Wilderness SafarI.

We are sailing next August & I have that excursion booked already. Did you use the ship's excursion or independent. In this case it may be the same.

We booked it through the ship. We did prebook online and got a small discount.

You will love this excursion.

I enjoyed your reviews and really enjoyed your pictures. What model camera were you using? Your pictures are awesome. I will be purchasing a new camera before our trip in May and would love to get one that would take such awesome photos. Thanks

I am researching cruises now...but Princess in May doesn't seem to have this small boat excursion to Tracy Arm? Am I missing something or is this not normally offered in May?

I agree there's too much to suggest.... where should we start? Need to make multiple cruises to fit it all in.

[*]need extra days in Vancouver.... there's too much to do and eat. Capilano? Grouse? Whistler? Victoria? Dim Sum?

Where do you recommend going for Dim Sum in Vancouver? We are staying at the Marriott Delta and plan on venturing into Chinatown.

  • In Chinatown..... I recommend the Floata
  • South West of your hotel.... I recommend the Kirin Mandarin
  • Outside of downtown..... check out Sun Sui Wah and/or Sea Harbour.

Not only are these places good.... they also work hard to welcome the English speaking clientele with bilingual or pictorial menus.
