Diamond: Are Blue Jeans Ok on non-formal nights?

Although the specific guidelines indicate "torn" jeans are not allowed in the dining room, they also state passengers would dress as they would for a fine dining establishment on land. I’m sorry, to me that doesn’t mean casual wear – which jeans are. I realize that some people feel they can get away with “nice†jeans, but we all know darn well that those are the same jeans they wore out during the day. I realize my thinking is old school, but it seems pretty lazy to me not to at least shower and change for dinner. And whether or not anyone else is wearing jeans really has no significance…except there’s a bunch of people who are not proper.

And before anyone implies that I’m saying that my experience is ruined because people are underdressed, far from it. It’s always nice to sit back and have a good snicker.

I think that if Princess or any other cruise line for that matter, does not enforce a dress code and allows jeans, etc., in the dining room cruising will have lost some of its allure. We wear jeans when we eat at Wendy's, cruising is special and it would be sad to see it change. My DH and I will keep dressing up till the bitter end.

In the Sterling dining room on the Diamond, on a Formal Night, a person at the next table was wearing jeans.

For those of you who know the set-up of tables for two along the outside walls, this clod had actually moved his chair into the tiny space between the tables so he could better ogle (and you only imagine what else) his girlfriend. The back of his head was directly over the next table. How many hairs do we lose a day?

Takes all kinds to make a world.

I have sailed Princess four times and I have only seen jeans in the dining rooms on the first and last nights of the cruise. Most folks that want to wear shorts or jeans use the Horizon Court or room service. On formal night I have seen anything from Scottish kilts, tuxedos, formal gowns, to nice pants suits. Many men wear just a suit jacket and tie.

In the summer, most change quickly from the more formal clothes into shorts/jeans for evening after dinner activities such as the shows and casino. In the winter, it seems people stay dressed up more.

You can have a great time no matter what you wear!

I have seen jeans on casual nights before, but ONLY when we were on our Alaska Cruise. Never have I seen them warn to the dining room except on that cruise. But hey, there was a guy on that cruise also that wore a buttoned up flannel shirt on FORMAL night too...................now that was a real shocker, and he sat at our table too.

Amazing to us how cruising and the dress has changed in the last 10 years, I can remember back when you would be turned away on any night in the dining room if you were wearing jeans.

Even though I have not been on a cruise as of yet (going on the sun May 05) I agree that not wearing jeans in the dining room especially on formal night. I have to dress up every day for work since I work in a bank. But I love to dress up and dress down. It shows both sides of me. But there are times where I would love to wear jeans all day and night. And I'll probably order room service.

But as an avid jean wearer I do have Day and NIght Jeans. The jeans I wear in the daytime are not torn or anything I just don't wear them at night. I have more designer jeans for night (floral designs on them, rhinestones cool different things that are very classy with a nice dress shirt to match. I probably won't wear them in the dining room but I would change after dinner if I wanted to wear them. Sometimes I do that if I go to a restaurant that does not allow jeans. When I go somewhere afterwards I change in the car.

My dad has been on several cruises and hates absolutely hates dressing up, no ties, no collar shirts. He just does not like that. He loves jeans. I think he only wore a tux twice in his life and my wedding will be the third. He's over 50. When he lets me pick out restaurants for my birthday, the only clause, jeans have to be allowed or he stays home. I have no problem with this, that's what he likes.

Everybody has different views on this. I think if Princess will allow it to happen , then its ok. Everybody has different styles and I respect everybody for doing what they want to make them happy. I think that is all that matters, BE HAPPY ON YOUR CRUISE.

How old are you? Most likely you won't get turned away from any dining room in jeans (w/ the exception of *maybe* formal evenings) and I think wearing jeans is really a matter of age and decorum over anything else.

I have not seen older people wear jeans in the dining room and that might be more of an issue of a generational gap when jeans were thought of as cowboy wear icon_wink.gif I think with the designer denim craze, jean would be fine, not because they're Sevens or Blue Cults but because there's just a general lax in clothing and as you know, jeans have become trendy, everything else is old-fashioned. icon_wink.gif

NYC, contrary to popular believe, is NOT as formal as it once was and even the mega fund managers don't necessarily wear suits anymore. You go to any of the top restaurants for lunch and you're just as likely to see the sweater/khaki/polo combo on men as you are the pinstripes.

**However** denim on a cruise worn w/ a collared shirt, a strappy tank with heels and jewelry IMO is fine -- you might even look more dressed up than others since it's an item that can either be dressed up or dressed down.

And yes, I have worn jeans to dinner on Princess cruises in the dining room. And no, no one criticized me, at least not to my face and no one really even cared, nor did I look like I just came from the beach or from the farm or off the horsey.

As long as your look isn't "sloppy" than anything can be ok icon_razz.gif

Dare me to wear a potato sack and flip flops on my next cruise and I might just take you up on your offer icon_biggrin.gif

Come to think of it, I've also worn flip flops to dinner.

Thanks for the reminder.

We have always cruised in the Caribbean and see very few jeans. I wear jeans all the time but wouldn't think of doing it on the cruise. It's too hot. I think you would be more comfortable and feel less out of place if you didn't wear jeans.

We would never think of wearing jeans on formal night, but I don't see what's wrong with dressing up your jeans for the more casual nights at dinner. We are from Orlando, Florida and people here wear SHORTS to fancy restaurants. I have been to some of the expensive steakhouses and seafood places here in town and people in fancy dresses and suits stick out like a sore thumb!

So, for Princess to say to wear what you would wear to a nice restaurant in town - well, that's just confusing because it differs depending on where you live. When we read that, we didn't have a doubt that jeans would be okay. Now, it sounds like we're going to be outcast renegades if we wear jeans...but to be honest, I don't own much else, and definitely nothing fancy (except my wedding dress).

Maybe it IS a generational thing. We're in our 30's and we think jeans can be a part of a nice "business casual" outfit. Every cruise I've been on jeans were okay in the dining room. My dad worked for a major cruise line for years and he thinks jeans in the dining room is okay (not on formal night, of course).

I don't think this debate will ever be resolved until Princess gets a clearer dress code, and is strict about enforcing it. People will still complain about the dress code if they don't agree with it, but at least it wouldn't be open to interpretation.

Wow! I have left several posted questions on this board over the past month....who would have thought the "jeans question" would have gotten over 30 responses??? Hmmm...maybe my next question will be about everyone sending me one dollar to help with my bar tab.... icon_wink.gif We leave in two days... (I'll be the one in the nice, non-frayed, non-holed, pressed, non-stained, designer pair of........jeans! icon_biggrin.gif

I'm another one who just got off the Diamond last weekend and there were many people wearing jeans in the dining rooms - and one guy we saw a couple of nights (had Rod Stewart type hair for those of you who were also on the cruise) and he wore a t-shirt at least 2 nights and wasn't turned away. I'm not for a "formal" atmosphere like many are - but that was too far the other way for me.

I worked at a gentlemen's club in London that had a policy requiring men to wear jackets and neckties. One day, a man came in wearing a sportscoat over a turtleneck. He looked fine to me, but the front hall porter had a stock of spare ties and made him put one on with his turtleneck. He looked ridiculous then.

In over 20 cruises, I can't recall anyone wearing jeans in the dining room at night unless it was some 50s theme night or something.

Of course, I haven't been cruising the mass market ships for a while, so my fear is that on my upcoming cruise, the dress code will be dumbed down.

I'm always amused at people who plan to beat the dress code and then ask for positive reinforcement that it's really okay.

I would never appear in the dining room dressed marginally. For one thing, my lady deserves to see me at my best when we go out at night. For another, it's pretty plain what the dress code is. I really don't think it's that much of an imposition to follow it.

And, yes, on formal night, we'll be dressed to the nines. Call me a traditionalist, but that's the way cruising is supposed to be.

I am a traditionalist also. I will always dress for dinner until I am dead and they pry my clothes out of my hands!!!!

I have worn jeans in the dining room on previous Princess cruises. I usually prefer the black jeans, although I have worn blue on occasion too.

I live in an area where you are as likely to see jeans as business suits in even the "fine" restaurants. So I never really gave a second thought to wearing jeans in the dining room (not on formal night, of course).

I don't remember how many other people I saw wearing them, but I know there were enough others that I didn't feel out of place in mine.

I've never seen jeans in the dining rooms for the smart casual dinners (and certainly not the formal nights) on Princess and I would never would wear them myself. I don't even bring them on my warm weather cruises because they are too hot. I think you would stick out a bit if you do wear your jeans to the dining room, even if no one confronts you directly.

I'm a 30-something person and I have never worked at a professional job where business casual meant jeans. Business/smart casual means dockers, slacks, collared shirts, etc. Jeans are jeans not matter what you wear them with and are casual clothing.

Of course people can do what they want, but it's so much nicer for everyone when people follow the rules and the spirit of the evening/event. I find that it is fun to take the time to look nice when going out for a nice meal, especially on a ship!

Happy sailing all, no matter what you wear!

Hey BjkTX, you saw the Rod Stewart guy too lol? I pointed him out to my husband! Actually the Patter each day says "no shorts or t-shirts" but I guess it's not enforced. But isn't that funny we both noticed Rod? He probably plays it up to look like him. Wonder of he was British too....

Again, I would like to stress that this seems to be an "anti jeans" crowd, not the fellow cruisers on the ship. Maybe an age thing, but you will certainly see a lot of folks (even ones in their late 50's) wearing jeans on the Diamond. You will not be out of place. Whether one "likes it or not" is not the issue. But, I guess half the crowd "liked it".

Some of us old Codgers can give some of you young ones a run for your money (As the saying goes).....Remember as far as I have noticed on the longer cruises you are outnumbered...so be kind to us Maybe you will learn from us the correct dress code...it grows on one you know. This jeans thing mania is just a passing mania that returns every now and again like a ship in the nite
Am suprised you mention Rod he is more our old codger age than you young things ....which just goes to prove............ Kruisey, it's funny that you keep on making comments that I am a jeans wearer. (3 times now) Just FYI I do not wear jeans, nor did I ever on the ship. I don't even own any, and if you read some of my previous comments you would know that was true. BTW, you have no idea what my age is, and in general I prefer the company of grandparent-age folks than people in my own age group, my husband is 14 years older than I am. In no way did I say anything derogative regarding any age group. I feel you owe me an apology. I never attacked you personally and now you are picking on me because you don't like what I am saying. You hate jeans, we get it, and you want everyone else to follow your opinion.

Damn - now I'm not sure if I'm a codger or not. I took jeans to Alaska, but never wore them to dinner. But then I didn't do formal either. As the one poster said you'd have to pry the formal clothes from his cold dead hands - in my case, you'll have to slip them over my cold dead body :-)

Hahaha, bjkTX! It's pretty difficult to get me into formal clothes, too. I have no reason to wear them, except for weddings and funerals. Everyone is so casual here in Florida...shorts and jeans for work, shorts and jeans for fancy restaurants, shorts and jeans for everything! I've been here so long that I feel uncomfortable in a dress. But, if we do end up going to formal nights, I'm going to pull out that one dress I have for weddings and pray it still fits me! Other than that, I guess I'll take my chances with the jeans and hope the jeans-haters don't pull me out of the dining room and drag me to the Horizon Court.

cnmiranda, I am a little confused. You say that Kruisy has attacked you 4 times by name. I looked back and she has posted 5 times, and not in any, is your name mentioned. She is speaking in generalities with her opinion, as you have, but in your last post, you specifically mentioned her name. Can you explain?? I must have missed something!!
