ConnyR Posted January 3, 2017 #1 Share Posted January 3, 2017 Hi, we will start our cruise in South America, so there is no chance to get US$ before cruise, except I buy it here in Europe. I plan to buy some OBC. Can I get some of the money during the cruise (maybe to pay some private tours)? I hate it to bring a lot of cash with me. Thanks
joe d Posted January 3, 2017 #2 Share Posted January 3, 2017 When I need US dollars and Princess has them at a good price I buy OBC, download them to my ships card in the casino and then cash them out in the Casino. Please note the Princess exchange rate is not always a good deal. During our South American cruise we found that most businesses near the port would accept US dollars but as we got further away most businesses did not accept the US dollar. Credit card and local currency was the best, most effective way for our purchases. If you are calling at the Falkland Islands the local currency is the GBP. Local stores will accept USD, but at a 10-15% discount.
JF - retired RRT Posted January 3, 2017 #4 Share Posted January 3, 2017 Just remember...if you use the casino as an ATM, you MUST play a little, don't just put the money from your account into a slot machine and cash out immediately. You run the risk of having your casino account closed, if you do that.
ConnyR Posted January 3, 2017 Author #5 Share Posted January 3, 2017 We want to do some private tours and they want to be payed in US$. So that is the reason for my asking. In the moment Princess will give us a very good exchanging rate.(Much better than our bank - can't believe it but I doublechecked it and also my TA)

You run the risk of having your casino account closed, if you do that. You don't have to play necessarily. What we have done is buy "casino" credits (different then OBC) before we leave, when we get on board, they are in our room, NOT on our account. I then take the vouchers to the casino window and get cash for them. I have never been asked to play! Hope this helps

Instead it appears on your onboard account to be used in the casino. I suppose you could use it to get chips and then later turn the chips in for cash. (Another cruise line prevents this by issuing special chips from your account. Only if you win regular chips can you turn them in for cash.) You can get US $ from an ATM on board (if it works). There will be a service charge of about $6 plus whatever your bank would charge.
sandyoftheseas Posted January 5, 2017 #8 Share Posted January 5, 2017 I plan on calling Princess and getting casino credit using my credit card. If I don't use all my casino credit (I hope to win some and not need to use it all) how will they refund the casino credit. Credit back to my credit card, cash, or check after I return home.
